Marseille-Lyon match canceled after coach stoned and bloodied
The French Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais has been canceled after the away team’s coach was stoned and left bleeding.
Lyon was scheduled to host Marseille at the Stade Velodrome in France on Sept. 30 in the 10th round of the 2023-24 Ligue 1.
However, while traveling to the stadium, the Lyon away team bus was attacked by opposition supporters near the stadium.
Lyon coach Fabio Grosso was struck in the face by a shard of broken window glass, bleeding profusely and rushed to the hospital. According to the BBC, Grosso was unable to speak due to dizziness.
Fans had already packed the stadium, but with the coach rushed to the hospital before the game, the Ligue 1 secretariat canceled the match. A rescheduled date for the canceled match will be confirmed at a later date.
The Marseille club said: “We wish Coach Grosso a speedy recovery. A few stupid people have prevented 65,000 fans from watching football. Violence has no place in the world of soccer,” the club said in a statement.
French Sports Minister Amélie Castella also tweeted, “This incident is disgusting. It is no longer acceptable in French society to see a soccer team manager’s face covered in blood before a game,” she condemned. 토토사이트
