MAHABHARATA VI: METHODS AND SCHOLARSHIP

This course is the sixth in a 6-part course sequence that explores India’s great epic, the Mahābhārata.
This final module covers the history of Mahābhārata scholarship. We will discuss historical issues such as the probability of a historical war, the identification and dating of this war, and the contrast between the history in the text on the one hand and the history of the text and its reception on the other.
We will study the creation of a critical edition of the Mahābhārata and what the completion of this edition reveals about the transmission of the epic. Topics include historical criticism, higher and lower criticism, textual criticism, principles of reconstruction, and the use of the edition, including its critical apparatus and appendices.
