“The little guys, their self-confidence at this young age – I think that’s a really good sign for the team as well, said the Liverpool manager. How the team let these boys grow up next to them. Seventeen years old, Isaac [Mabaya], a little microphone check! I couldn’t handle it. So, really cool, cool moments all night.”
It must be nerve-wracking for young players to perform in front of international superstars and a world-class coaching staff. But the sounds of this Mabaya did not bother at all. Come on boy!
Mabaya firmly on Klopp’s radar now
In the pre-season, Mabaya impressed not only off the field. The teenager had a great two games for Liverpool in Thailand and Singapore. Those two performances earned him a place in Austria at this week’s training camp. While his playing time is likely to continue to shrink until the start of the season, this week’s experience will be invaluable.
Mabaya has not been in Klopp’s first team before. Now that he’s on the boss’s radar, he can look forward to being in the senior team more often in the future. It certainly helps his cause that he is versatile. The young man from Preston played a lot of football for academy teams in midfield.
However, it was on the right flank that he shone in friendly matches for Liverpool. With Calvin Ramsay still reeling from his injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold may still have a vacancy as an understudy. With every minute he impresses Klopp in Austria, his goal of becoming a first-team player will get closer. Mabaya still has a long way to go to do so. But he certainly hasn’t hurt his chances in the past three weeks.

The Reds pulled off a comfortable 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig last Thursday but were defeated 1-0 by sister club Salzburg less than a week later. That’s not a problem, of course, but without context it could be among certain circles.

Fabio is a fantastic talent, he showed it tonight, but he can do better. But now we’re talking about players again…why should we judge them differently than established players? They are tired, they are tired, and we constantly ask “how good are they?”. They are tired, they cannot be the best version of themselves.
“So, I understand what you have to ask, but I don’t care how they are at the moment. We must get through this period, we need it. It’s a long season with a long break in between and another pre-season and all that, really weird. We have to make sure we’re ready for this, not today.”
We want to be ready for Saturday [against Man City in the Community Shield] for sure, but it’s going to be a big fight because you can’t be at your best, it’s almost impossible. The only good news is City are in the same situation as us. This is different from Salzburg, they already have two games [in the season], so it’s not really fair competition! It’s a huge difference – in two weeks we should look different too.
The NINE Brighton players who could still leave this summer
Brighton and Hove Albion continue to refine their squad ahead of the Premier League opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford on 7 August. Graham Potter still has to make key decisions on several players after a largely successful pre-season. Brighton had a training camp in Portugal and returned with a 2-1 friendly victory over Reading last Saturday.
Yesterday a much-changed squad played well against Premier League rivals Brentford but lost 1-0 to Thomas Frank’s side. A number of new players made their first appearance at the Amex Stadium, but it also gave Potter an opportunity to evaluate some minor players ahead of the first Premier League match. The defense situation is still of interest as Shane Duffy, Matt Clarke and Jan Paul van Hecke look to be in the squads for the match. Here are nine Brighton & Hove Albion players who can still get out before the window closes.
1. Kjell Scherpen
The club and he must decide whether it is better for the giant Dutch goalkeeper to play regularly on loan or stay and challenge Rob Sanchez for the No. 1 jersey.
2. Jan Paul van Hecke
Another player who played against Brentford on Tuesday. The defender did not rule out that this season he will go on loan again. After his impressive performances at Blackburn last season, there were many applicants.
3. Shane Duffy

The striker was on loan at Cadiz last season. Lost against Brentford but will likely be on loan or permanent this summer if they can find a club!
6. Marc Cucrella
Manchester City are wanted but it will take much more than the original £30m bid to pick Albion’s star player.
7. Leo Trossard
An interesting situation here, as the Belgian has only 12 months left on his contract. There have been talks of Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham showing interest, but there seems to be little mention of a move and Trossard will want regular football ahead of Qatar, which he is sure to get at Brighton. Said last season that he would listen to other suggestions, but Potter hopes his key man stays.
8. Andi Zeqiri
The striker was on loan at Augsburg last season. Played against Brentford but is unlikely to be part of Potter’s first-team plans, especially with the arrival of Denise Undaw.
9. Neal Maupay
Serie A side Salernitana offered £15m for the striker earlier this window, but Albion are unlikely to let him go for that price. Mope was frustrated by the lack of minutes at the end of last season, and the arrival of Denise Undave, as well as the fact that Potter preferred Welbeck, may further upset the defiant Frenchman.
