Life hack from student "Stankin": how to combine high technology and steampunk

How did you get interested in information technology?

My passion for programming began after we started computer science classes at school. The school program in this subject is quite meager, then I learned about the Samsung IT school. That year – and it was 2014, I was in 9th grade – they recruited pilot groups. And I thought it was a good opportunity to try my hand at IT. As a graduate student, I made the military-economic real-time strategy game Tiny Lands. What other universities did you consider when thinking about higher education?

In fact, I did not particularly choose. While in 11th grade, I came up with a wooden robot – a chess player Chess bot, which can play with a person and is controlled using a mobile application. I thought that the program was abstract, but it is interesting to play chess with a real opponent. Therefore, I came up with a Chess bot – this is a mechanical manipulator arm that can rearrange figures on the field: using a mobile camera, the robot sees a chessboard, analyses and makes a move. I designed and drew it myself, and cut out the details on a laser machine.

This project was presented at the Christmas festival of digital interactive installations, where specialists from Stan kin, working at the Center for Technological Support for Education, drew attention to it and invited me to program a real industrial manipulator for playing chess. At that time, they also had some groundwork, and when they saw my Chess bot, they decided to use ideas with a technical vision. As a result of this, one might say, coincidence, I, then still a schoolboy, managed to realize real production tasks. And after that I entered the MST “Stan kin”, here my interests in information technology and mechanisms just converged.

What’s the hardest part of learning?

For any student who receives a technical speciality, calculus is traditionally the most difficult. For some, engineering graphics and physics are difficult. And yet the “demography” is terrible – on average, in a group of 30 people, we have only five or six girls.

How do you see the future of robotics? Will machines displace humans, as many fear?

I believe that robotics has a great future – just as computerization has changed the world, so maybe in ten years robotization will make a new revolution. But there is always a computer behind the actions of a robot, in this sense the power of machines is not terrible, without control the machine is useless. But is it worth to be afraid of artificial intelligence? Many authoritative people speak out on this topic: Steve Hawking, Steve Wozniak and others – but they have no consensus. I haven’t worked out yet either. In any case, this moment is not close enough to start panicking.


What advice would you give to schoolchildren who are now thinking about connecting their lives with robotics and high technologies?

From about 9-10 grades, at the earliest from grade 8, look for courses or a programming mentor or study additional resources yourself, since the school computer science course is not enough. But earlier, too, it is not necessary – a person should develop an interest, a complete understanding of what is happening in the IT sphere and what is really interesting to him.
