Max Peiffer Watenphul was born in Quedlinburg, near Weferlingen, in 1909. He studied church law at the universities of Bonn and Münster and worked as a law clerk in the Hattingen district court from 1919 to 1920. In that year he decided to give up his career as a lawyer and concentrate on painting.

He became a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar and met Lily and Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandisky and Kurt Schwitters and became a member of the artist group “Das Junge Rheinland”.
