Tips For Traveling in Isla Mujeres.
Banking
There is one bank in Isla Mujeres. Once you arrive at the ferry dock, you will see it just across the way. This is the most convenient place to exchange your money so you are not traveling through the airport and the ferry with too much cash. They will exchange traveler’s checks, too. Their hours are from 8:30AM until 6PM weekdays and 9AM to 2PM on Saturdays.
Clothing
The dress in Isla Mujeres is casual while remaining respectful of the locals; please save the beachwear for the beaches and swimming pool. Bring along a light sweater as nights have been known to cool off considerably. Most restaurants do not have a dress code, but just in case you decide, perhaps on a whim, to dine in one of the more upscale restaurants, you may want to bring a nice outfit along in your luggage.
Electricity
The electricity in Mexico is the same as in the U.S.; 120V with a 2- or 3-prong outlet.
Medical Facilities
There are several clinics and doctors offices on the island with general medicine practices. If you are in need of extensive treatment, you will likely be air-ambulanced back to the U.S.
Money
Isla Mujeres’s currency is the Peso. You can exchange your cash at the bank once you get to Isla Mujeres, but be sure to travel with just enough pesos for your transportation from the airport in Cancun to the island, including tip for porters and taxi drivers.
Passports & Immigration
When your flight lands in Cancun, you will need to present a valid passport and a tourist card (you will get this on the airplane).
Personal Safety
Although the island does purify the water, you will want to stick to bottled just to be safe, which you can find anywhere on the island.
Telephones
To call Isla Mujeres from the U.S., dial 011, then 52 (the country code), then the area code (998 is Isla Mujeres) and the seven-digit number. To call the U.S. from Mexico, dial 011 then the area code and number.
Tipping / Gratuities
Please remember to tip when visiting us in Isla Mujeres; anyone in the service industry depends on tips as part of their wage. Typically fifteen percent is good, but feel free to add to that if you feel the service was exceptional.
