• Don’ts

There is a list of things that one should not do when in ihram. Here are about twenty-five items that will be prohibited.

  3. Use perfume.
  4. Husband and wife’s sexual relationship.
  5. Kissing a woman (wife).
  6. Hunting.
  7. Examining yourself in the mirror.
  8. The killing of insects.
  9. Fighting.
  10. Antimony (Surma) in the eyes.
  11. Anger (Fusouq).
  12. The violence on insects.
  13. Self-improvement.
  14. Hair removal from the body.
  15. For men, to wear a hat.
  16. Ladies should veil their faces and conceal their hands.
  17. Keeping safe in the shadow.
  18. Putting oil on.
  19. Wearing shoes to keep your feet warm.
  20. Nail removal.
  21. The act of causing one’s body to bleed.

• Using washing powders to clean Ihram

You cannot smell, apply, or wear fragrances when in the state of ihram. You can’t even wear garments that have scents leftover on them. Except for one smell, Khalooq ul Kaaba, which is used on the Holy Kaaba, all of these requirements are applied to all scents such as musk, amber, saffron, and others. Yes, you may wash your ihram with washing powder because it is a cleaning substance and not a perfume. When you go to sleep, you can also remove your ihram.

To tell the difference between perfume and detergent, all you need is a little common sense. If you have a meeting with a buddy or anybody else, please do so. What kind of detergent or scent will you use on your clothes? Perfume, for sure. So, the next time you go to conduct Umrah or Hajj, you should bring two sets of Ihram. If this isn’t the case, don’t be afraid to use detergents to wash Ihram rather than conducting rituals with a grey one.
