Insulate Your Boat – What Type of Insulation is Best For Your Boat?
Insulating your boat is one of the most important investments you can make for your vessel. Not only will it increase the comfort of your family, friends and guests onboard, but it will also reduce fuel consumption, which is particularly beneficial given today’s rising energy costs in the UK.
Additionally, insulation is a great way to protect the interior of your vessel against saltwater, moisture, mould, mildew and corrosion. It also helps to prevent internal condensation and temperature fluctuations, which are the leading causes of wear and tear on your boat.
While there are many different types of insulation, not all products hold the same properties and therefore, it’s best to choose a specialist who can advise you on what type of product would be the most suitable for your boat. At Spray Foam Tech, we specialise in marine insulation and have a wide range of experience in insulating a wide variety of boats including narrow boats, canal boats, rib tenders, tugs and more.
In terms of hull insulation, we can recommend either open- or closed-cell spray foam. Alternatively, we can supply thermally efficient foam sheets which can be cut to size and adhered with self-adhesive spray or contact cement. These can be a good option if the steel is already sandblasted and primed. For non-cored hulls we would recommend a thickness of about 2″ (50mm). This would ensure the hull is warmer in winter and cooler in summer, as well as being much more resistant to condensation mildew.boat insulation
