Instructions for Choosing the Right Wine Container
It’s only natural to think about wine rack dimensions when searching for home wine bottle storage. You’ll need to consider the bottle’s size in addition to the more practical question, how much does a bottle of wine weigh?
It’s reasonable to be concerned that the weight of even a single bottle of wine or champagne will overload your wine shelving unit, given that the bottles are glass and contain liquid. Here at Cranville Wine Racks, however, we can guarantee that our wine bottle storage is not only strong, but also capable of holding the weight of several bottles of wine.
The typical empty wine bottle weighs around 1.5 kg, while full premium bottles can top 2 kg. However, there are other wine bottle capacities besides the conventional 750 ml, but what are they?
Piccolo or Divided
Because a single serving of champagne requires only 187.5 ml of wine, a split bottle is commonly used. In English-speaking countries, this bottle is called a Split, but in Italy, it is called a Piccolo.
Demi or half
In other words, a half bottle contains exactly half as much wine as a full bottle. The wine in this bottle is 375 ml, which is enough to fill two standard wine glasses. A demi bottle is equal to a half bottle in the United States and other English-speaking countries.
Standard
We have already established that a standard bottle of wine (750 ml) yields enough liquid for five servings. This is the standard bottle size for wine, so it’s what you’ll see at stores everywhere.
Magnum
A Magnum bottle of wine, which is twice as large as a regular wine bottle, can hold up to 1.5 litres of wine. You can get up to ten drinks out of this.
That’s Right, It’s a Double Magnum
You’ve probably guessed by now that a double Magnum bottle is four times the size of a regular bottle. This means that the volume of wine contained in a double Magnum bottle is 3 litres, or 20 standard wine glasses.
Jeroboam
A Jeroboam bottle holds 4.5 litres of liquid, or the equivalent of six regular wine bottles, and can therefore produce about 30 servings. The first king of Israel’s northern Kingdom, Jeroboam is the inspiration for the name. According to the Hebrew Bible, his reign occurred after a rebellion led by the northern Israelite tribes against Rehoboam, which brought an end to the United Monarchy.
Imperial
You can fit as many as eight regular wine bottles into an imperial bottle, or two double Magnums. That’s 40 glasses of wine’s worth of liquid, because this holds 6 litres.
Salmanazar
A Salmanazar wine bottle contains 9 litres of liquid, which is enough to fill 60 standard wine glasses. Salmanazar is an Assyrian king whose reign was marked by a never-ending string of military campaigns against the Babylonians, hence the name.
Balthazar
There are sixteen regular wine bottles (or two Imperials) in a Balthazar bottle. That’s 12 litres, or enough to fill 80 standard glasses. One of the three wise men who brought Jesus a jar of myrrh on the day he was born also went by the name Balthazar.
Nebuchadnezzar
The largest wine bottle you’ll come across is the Nebuchadnezzar variety, which is equivalent to twenty regular wine bottles. One hundred standard glasses can be filled from its massive 15 litre capacity. Nebuchadnezzar refers to the Babylonian king who was widely regarded as the most powerful ruler during his dynasty. This bottle size has rightfully earned its moniker as the most notable in any wine cellar.
