After landing at Lukla airport, the trip goes ahead to Phakding on the first day and treks to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorakshep before reaching the base camp. Then the trip descends backwards following the same route which has taken on the way up.
If you don’t have enough time for a 12 days trek, you can make it in 9 days. A 9 days trip is helicopter return trek that you don’t need to walk back to Lukla after visiting the base camp and Kala Patthar. You can directly fly from the base camp to Kathmandu on a helicopter.
