To obtain the ECBA certification—the "gold standard" in the field—you must follow a structured process mandated by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
2026 Update: PMI is launching a new PMP exam on July 9, 2026. If you plan to take the current version, you must sit for the exam by July 8, 2026. The new version will significantly increase the weight of the Business Environment domain (from 8% to 26%) and integrate AI and sustainability topics.
1. Confirm Your Eligibility
Before applying, ensure you meet one of the following two professional pathways:

Note: The 35 contact hours can be waived if you hold an active CAPM® certification.
2. Complete Your 35 Contact Hours
You must complete 35 hours of formal project management education.
- PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs): These offer instructor-led bootcamps that guarantee the hours and focus on the Exam Content Outline (ECO).
- On-Demand Courses: Platforms like Coursera (Google Project Management Certificate) or Udemy offer flexible ways to earn these hours.
3. Submit Your Application
Create an account at PMI.org and fill out the ECBA application.
- Project Descriptions: You must summarize your experience using PM terminology (Initiation, Planning, Execution, etc.).
- Review Period: PMI typically takes 5–10 business days to review your application.
- Audits: A small percentage of applications are selected for a random audit. If selected, you must provide proof of your degree, training certificates, and supervisor signatures.
4. Pay Fees and Schedule the Exam
Once approved, you will receive an invitation to pay and schedule your test.
- PMI Member Cost: $405 USD (Membership is $139/year and gives you a free PMBOK® Guide).
- Non-Member Cost: $555 USD.
- Scheduling: You can take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center or as a remotely proctored online exam from home.
5. Study and Pass
The 2026 exam consists of 180 questions to be completed in 230 minutes.
- Focus Areas: People (Leadership/Conflict), Process (Methodologies), and Business Environment (Organizational Strategy).
- The "Hybrid" Shift: Expect roughly 50% of the exam to cover Agile and Hybrid approaches rather than just traditional Waterfall.
