How to Make Your Engagement Ring Cleaner

If you want your engagement ring to sparkle and shine, you’ll need to clean it regularly. It’s important to do this because dirty rings are a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause skin irritation and discoloration of the metals or stones on your ring.

Taking your ring in for professional cleaning is always a good idea, as a jeweller can get into the tight spaces between prongs and under stone settings to thoroughly clean and inspect for any signs of damage. But it’s also not a bad idea to do some regular at-home cleanings, as this will help dislodge surface dirt and grime that builds up each day.

To do an at-home ring cleaning, mix a bowl of warm to hot water with mild liquid dishwashing solution (Ivory is a popular choice). Soak your ring in the solution for 20 to 40 minutes, and then scrub gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush, paying particular attention to any crevices where dirt might collect. Rinse the ring and then dry it completely with a smooth cloth, being careful not to use anything that might leave behind lint or fibres on your ring.

Another great way to clean your engagement ring is to soak it in white vinegar or another natural but not overly harsh astringent, such as witch hazel. Add the ring to a quarter cup of the solution and soak for five minutes before scrubbing with your toothbrush and rinse. Both of these solutions will work for most hard precious stones, including diamonds and emeralds.
