1. Don’t be a selfish tweeter.

Sure, you can post your own services and products from time to time — but don’t talk about yourself in every tweet. When you send out a random tweet, nobody takes as much notice of it as if the tweet was addressed to them personally. This also has two benefits – first, it shows your followers that you communicate with others and are friends with people who are “more fabulous on Twitter” then you, second, you get some good connections, which Twitter is really good for.
3. Don’t cry online .
Unless you’re in the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, no one really wants to read emotional or dramatic posts. Only people who are positive and optimistic can survive in the business world, and when people see that you are having even the slightest negative impact, they will cut you off. On the other hand, don’t be one of those people who always proclaim love and happiness from their chosen deity and overdo it with spirituality – give people something useful or thought provoking to read. If you find something you’re really interested in, share it on Twitter and credit the author or source. Share cool things other people have made, not just things you’ve made. Just learned a new fact? Great – some other people might like to know. This is what celebrities and big companies always do for each other, but in the beginning you have to do it for free to get more Twitter followers. Sure, if you have 500,000 followers you might be asked to endorse products, but to start you have to do it for free.
5. Don’t be a faker.
There are so many of the same people on Twitter. Change it up a bit – if you’re secretly incredibly lazy and love pizza, don’t pretend to be a super productive health junkie. This will not get you more Twitter followers as people can spot fakes from a mile away! Just be who you are and if no one seems to understand you, then maybe you need to make some changes in your approach!

(Actually, I just read about it and thought it was crazy!) Supposedly this gives the appearance that you have guru-like status and are highly revered. It may seem like you’re getting more Twitter followers than people who follow you, but do so at your own risk, it may have some repercussions.
7. Be an expert.
Sure, Paris Hilton isn’t an expert on everything we can see (oops, did I say that?!), but she’s hot and famous, which is more than enough to get more Twitter followers than your average twit, lol. If you’re just on Twitter to flaunt your day with your friends and you want to get more followers, then unless you’re ridiculously good looking or super funny, you need to have something to offer. Whether you’re just really good at coding, knowing how to get 8-pack abs, or building origami houses, you’ve got to have something great to offer. Drop random knowledge bombs and hacks so people can help them, and you’ll get people to thank you and mention you – all of which help get more Twitter followers.
At the end of the day, Twitter is nothing more than making friends with people. Oddly enough, not many people try to get as many Twitter friends as they do on Facebook. Remember, if you buy a whole bunch of Twitter fans sitting and doing nothing, it’s not going to do you any favors. What do you do when you want to make more friends in real life? You wouldn’t buy them. Twitter is real life, it’s only on a cyber platform – people are real, remember this and you will get more twitter followers.
Twitter is the real world… sort of
If you’re a great person, funny and interesting, people with common interests will naturally want to interact with you. Don’t be annoying or nagging people, just be like you would your friends and family. If you’re struggling to get more Twitter followers, start befriending and serving more people. Will Smith can get away with talking about who he’s having lunch with because it’s probably someone great – I mean, it’s Will Smith who doesn’t want to hear what he’s up to!
However, when you tweet, you realize that you’re not famous and nobody cares about you personally yet – you have to do something, say something or show something cool, interesting or funny and add value.
That’s the way the world works, and Twitter is no exception. If you don’t bring anything, why would anyone want to be friends with you? Even your friends are with you for some reason – what is that reason? Are you hilarious when you go shopping or something? Ask your friends what traits they like about you, then work to highlight those in your tweets to get more Twitter followers.
How your business can get more Twitter followers
It’s rare to speak to a business owner who uses Twitter but doesn’t want more followers. Some may say that the numbers don’t matter and they only care about “quality followers”. However, it’s usually those who have few followers who make this argument.
As a business owner, why do you want more Twitter followers? Here are three good reasons:
- More followers create social authority. As with any other ranking system, the higher your follower count, the more people (your customers) will assume you’re an expert — or at least someone interesting and popular. It may not be valid, but that’s how it works in a world where there’s a ranking for everything.
- More followers expand your influence. Twitter is the perfect tool for spreading ideas to a wider audience. If you have ideas worth sharing, why not get them out to as many people as possible? Twitter makes it ridiculously easy to do this. The larger your number of followers, the faster your ideas will spread and be shared.
- More followers lead to more sales. You’re probably on Twitter for one of three reasons: to be entertained, to connect with others, or to sell your stuff. Whether it’s a brand, a product, a service, or even a cause, more followers is an opportunity to generate more leads and more conversions. It’s an excellent marketing tool for small businesses.
Before I give you some suggestions on how to increase your Twitter follower count, I think it’s important that I first tell you how not to do it.
Don’t try to cheat the system and try to attract thousands of followers instantly overnight. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Unless you are a celebrity who has built a large audience in another media channel, gaining followers will take time and effort, but it will be worth the investment.
What about buying followers? After all, there are many people promoting this type of service.
The first reason you wouldn’t want to do this is because it’s against the Twitter Rules. But even worse is the fact that these so-called followers have absolutely no affinity, connection, or interest in you or your business. It would be like your business sending a direct mail to an untargeted, generic list. The list would be worthless.
Instead of using these supposedly quick ways to build your follower count, I want to share with you some of my favorite proven ways to help you gain more loyal Twitter followers.
Engage and inform
Twitter is all about engagement. It’s a busy and fast-moving platform, so you need to create content that enlightens, informs, entertains, or inspires your followers. This can be achieved by sharing a good mix of content, both your own and other races. You’ll soon develop a large following of people who want to hang out with you and follow you because they like what you say or share.
Proudly display your Twitter button link
If you want visitors to your website to follow you on Twitter, make sure they can see your Twitter button link. You have to make it clear to them. Don’t bury the Twitter button at the bottom of your website or blog page. Make it prominent and ask your visitors to follow you. When they’re on your site, they’re obviously interested in learning more about you and what you have to say.
Include “Follow Me on Twitter” in your email signature.
Include a link to your Twitter account in your email signature. (An email signature is a small piece of information that’s automatically appended to the end of an email message. People typically include their name and contact information in the email signature, but you can add anything you whatever you like.) Follow you on twitter easily. Once again, don’t let them hunt for you.
Add your Twitter ID to your business cards and letterhead.
While this won’t garner you a large following very quickly, it’s a good habit to get into the habit of and is just as important as adding your physical address, phone number, and email address.
Avoid too many ads.
Yes, you can promote your blog posts, products, etc. on Twitter, but be careful. There is an invisible line that you must not cross. If you do that, you’ll look like a spammer – or just plain clueless. Not only will you NOT get any additional followers, but you will also use up your existing followers and many of them will simply stop following you.
Actively follow other people on Twitter.
Start your networking efforts by becoming a follower of the people you admire in your industry. Read their tweets to get a sense of who they are and what their goals are on Twitter. It’s a good idea to follow as many people in your industry or industry as possible. Once you find people and start following them, they have a chance to see both your good content and your online presence. They’ll then be more likely to reciprocate and follow you back, as will many of their followers, who might even turn out to be potential customers.
Place your Twitter name in mass media campaigns
If you run ads in magazines, TV or radio, you need to make sure your Twitter name is visible and audible for everyone. Just add the # (hashtag symbol) followed by the name of your business or advertisement and people will follow you.
Keep your posts short enough to retweet.
Retweeting is the only way to get noticed by people who don’t follow you, but you need to make it easy for others to retweet your posts. So keep your tweets short enough for people to add the RT symbol and your username (“RT @yourcompanyname”). For example, let’s say your name is 14 characters long, you need to include the space as well. That is, to be retweetable, your tweet must not be longer than 126 characters (140-14=126).
Do you have your twitter link on facebook
Almost everyone uses Facebook, so make it easy for them to switch to your Twitter account when they visit your Facebook profile. The ideal place would be in the “About Us” section.
Tweet often
Think of Twitter as a constant, fast-moving stream. Tweets flow by and are often never seen again. Therefore, you need to keep your tweets going lest they be forgotten. Be obvious. Stand out from the crowd and you will get a lot more followers.
Link to Twitter from LinkedIn.
A Twitter link on your LinkedIn account is perfect. You are allowed to have three links on your LinkedIn profile, so make sure one of them is your Twitter account. It’s ideal for networking, especially with the movers and shakers in your industry.
Reply to others publicly.
I used to reply to people via direct messages because I felt what I had to say was irrelevant to most of my followers. Not responding publicly made me seem unsociable. So now I almost exclusively reply in public, and really, the only people who see these messages are those who follow both me and the person I reply to, which is just a small subset of my followers. This makes my tweets social but not annoying.
Be generous when linking and retweeting others.
Twitter encourages a culture of sharing. The more you link to others, the more people will reciprocate, and that’s what needs to happen in order for you to grow your follower count. You need others to introduce you to your followers. However, don’t ask for a retweet too regularly. It’s okay once in a while, but if you just post content worth retweeting, people will be happy to do so for you without even having to ask!
These tips will really help increase your follower count and we hope they give you some inspiration. However, you have to remember this: When you are at the beginning of your Twitter journey, nobody is really going to pay you much attention.
Initially, your posts will get lost in a sea of other messages vying for attention, but on the plus side, there won’t be too many people seeing your messages until you’ve built a large following, so this is the perfect time to make some mistakes.
Remember: Twitter is a lot of work, has a somewhat steep learning curve, and can be a pretty scary place to start on day one. There are all those confusing signs and symbols, weird shortened links, the pressure to follow people you don’t know, and so many discouraging acronyms and catchphrases, not to mention the hashtag.
