How to do Umrah: A Basic Guide for First-Time Pilgrims
Muslims all over the world have a deep experience when they go on the spiritual trip of Umrah. In order to do Umrah, pilgrims must follow a particular set of rules. For first-timers, it’s important to know the basics so that their journey goes smoothly and gives them what they came for. In this piece, we’ll talk about the main steps of Umrah, which will be helpful for people who are going on this holy trip for the first time.
Ihram:
Before visiting the state of Ihram, pilgrims must do ritual washing (Wudu) to make sure they are clean. For a man to be in the state of Ihram, he has to wear two white, unstitched clothes and be in a ritually pure and focused state. This dress shows that a person is equal and humble before Allah. Women can wear open, modest clothes and keep wearing their Hijab.
Tawaf:
The first thing to do when you enter the Haram is to do Tawaf. Pilgrims walk around the Kaaba starting at the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad) and going in the opposite way of a clock. Women usually walk at a normal pace, while men usually walk quickly. During Tawaf, pilgrims pray, repeat verses from the Quran, and say their own prayers.
Sa’i:
After doing Tawaf, travellers do Sa’i, which is walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times. This is a way to remember when Hajar, the mother of the Prophet Ismail, went to look for water. Pilgrims start at Safa and end at Marwa. In between, they pray to Allah and think about him.
Shaving or Trimming Hair:
When a man finishes Sa’i, he must either completely shave his head or cut his hair. It’s best to shave, but it’s not required. Women should cut off a small amount of their hair. This step means that the limits that come with the state of Ihram are over.
Optional Acts of Worship:
Even though it’s not required, it’s a good idea to do other acts of worship during Umrah. Some of these things are praying on their own, reading the Quran, going to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah (if it’s possible), and doing other things that show love and remember Allah.
When someone does Umrah for the first time, it can be awe-inspiring. By following the steps above, first-time pilgrims can feel confident and respectful as they start their spiritual trip. Remember that Umrah is a highly personal and introspective journey, and each step should be taken with sincerity and devotion. Before and during the pilgrimage, it is best to get advice from knowledgeable people or scholars to make sure that the rituals are done properly. May Allah accept the efforts and prayers of everyone who goes on this holy trip and give them a blessed and life-changing Umrah.
