How to Choose the Right Type of Boat Insulation
Insulation for boats and marine vessels isn’t a luxury; it’s an essential element of the onboard environment that ensures optimum comfort, safety and quality. It also provides a formidable barrier against moisture damage, resulting in reduced maintenance costs and prolonging the lifespan of the vessel.
The primary reason for insulation is to protect the interior of the boat from thermal loss and condensation, but soundproofing and fire protection are also important factors. The choice of boat insulation depends on the specific requirements of each application.
The ideal type of boat insulation is spray foam. It is extremely effective in both thermal regulation and soundproofing, dries rock hard and seals gaps to prevent energy loss. It also provides a watertight barrier against moisture that can lead to mildew and mold growth on the inside of the boat.
Foam sheets can be used in some applications but it’s important to remember that they need to be affixed tightly to the surface. Any looseness will allow moisture to get trapped under the insulation and infiltrate the hull, ultimately resulting in corrosion. Foam sheets can be self-adhesive or glued with contact cement, but the former option requires careful ventilation and is time consuming. The latter is more straightforward but still requires proper ventilation, and the use of contact cement in enclosed spaces means exposure to potentially harmful solvents.
