How Pastor Dwight A. Reed Balances Spiritual and Social Outreach at CATCOS

Pastor Dwight A. Reed leads Christ Apostolic Temple in Des Moines, Iowa, continuing his father’s legacy with faith and commitment. He built the ministry to include CATCOS- Community Outreach Services, as an effort to reach people in need.

Pastor Reed blends spiritual leadership and social service by demonstrating that faith is more than just worship; it’s caring, personal, and impactful in the community.

Pastoral Idea Rooted in Legacy

Pastor Dwight A. Reed continues a dynamic spiritual legacy; he is the son of Bishop Jeremiah Reed and Dr. Willie Mae Reed, who established Christ Apostolic Temple.

Dwight A. Reed is a trained theologian with a Master of Theology from JCAA. He served as an assistant to his father in multifaceted roles for nearly 20 years, including teacher, counselor, fundraiser, choir director, and more.

His ministry philosophy extends beyond preaching on Sundays, believing in a model of holistic care for the individual, activating a church that not only “feeds” individuals their spiritual food, but cares for their “real life” circumstances, restoring lives and building community.

CATCOS: Where Service and Care Meet

Through Bishop Dwight Reed Church, the community benefits from CATCOS-Christ Apostolic Temple Community Outreach Services, which seeks “to mitigate the negative effects of poverty.”

CATCOS operates several vital services:

  • Food Pantry: Provides food to families experiencing food insecurity.
  • Diaper Distribution: Delivers diapers, which are, in fact, a great help for families with babies.
  • Senior Smiles Program: Offers senior citizens support, companionship, and transportation.
  • Homeless Ministry: Assists homeless people with meals, counseling, and spiritual support.
  • Nursing-Home/Shut-In Ministry: Provides hospital/home visits and offers practical support 24/7.
  • Prison Ministry/Reentry Support: Offers an in-person Bible class in jail and provides reintegration support.
  • Yeshua Reentry & Recovery Center: Supports ex-offenders with access to housing, job training, and transportation.

Addressing Mental Health, Addiction, and Relationships

Pastor Dwight A. Reed has also been able to delve deep into personal needs in our community. He works with NAMI to promote mental health with the “Living Above Anxiety” class, which helps people process stress and fear. He addresses addiction with his “Road to Recovery” program.

The IOWA Department of Corrections partners with pastor Reed to facilitate this 12-step recovery program. He also supports families with “A Better You,” a marriage enrichment program that features communication and trust.

Pastor Reed invests in young people by facilitating youth summits and offering coding courses through P515, a partnership with Principal Financial. These projects enable Pastor Reed to provide the youth with positive guidance along with instruction in the area of important 21st-century skills.

Education and Next Generation Empowerment

Bishop Dwight Reed Church also invests its resources into the field of education and empowerment. Pastor Dwight Reed revitalized the JW Reed Christian Academy by improving its academic programs as well as providing scholarships to allow more students the chance to learn and succeed. He also provides classes on financial literacy and vocational training to help people acquire job skills and learn how to manage money wisely.

Additionally, Pastor Reed has developed a relationship with more than 70 employers to help individuals who have come out of prison gain employment and begin rebuilding their lives, become self-sustainable, and support their families. Pastor Reed's approach is to develop long-term opportunity as opposed to short-term relief.

The Spiritual-Compassionate Leadership Strategy

At Bishop Dwight Reed Church, the ministry promotes dignity-centered service, treating everyone with respect, listening carefully, and building trust. In the mind of pastor Dwight A. Reed, faith is not simply believing, but must be demonstrated through behaviors.

Under Pastor Reed's direct leadership, the volunteers serve as more than "supply dispensers," but actively work to build a relationship with people as they meet their needs, and follow up to provide support and assistance with their needs.

Pastor Reed's leadership demonstrates how spiritual teachings and social service come together to provide leadership for people to feel cared for, to feel valued, and to inspire them to develop.

Conclusion

Finally, we would like to say that Pastor Dwight A. Reed demonstrates how faith can serve as a motivator for action. At the same time, while remaining connected to his spiritual calling, he is a helper in the real world and uses his work with CATCOS to help the community in various practical ways.

Furthermore, Bishop Dwight Reed Church is a place of social change, offering assistance and support to families, the elderly, youth, and the needy. In this way, Reverend Reed's work illustrates how churches can facilitate change and have a positive impact on communities.

Consequently, you can be inspired to practice this kind of faith-in-action by supporting programs, volunteering, or creating your own initiatives in your community, all to help build stronger, healthier neighborhoods.
