How many athletes will compete in Olympic 3×3 basketball at Paris 2024?
A total of 64 athletes will take part in Paris 2024, the same number as in Tokyo 2020. In both the men’s and women’s competitions, eight teams of four athletes each (three on the court and one substitute) will compete. Each NOC will have the right to qualify a maximum of two teams, one for the men’s competition and one for the women’s.

What is the Olympic 3×3 basketball qualification path for Paris 2024?
Unlike many other sports, the NOC of the host country will not receive a quota for both men’s and women’s competitions, and qualification will not be automatic. The Paris 2024 Basketball 3×3 qualification process is divided into four stages.
Phase 1 – Ranking List of 1 November 2023
In total, the host country will be allocated one quota place for either men’s or women’s competitions. FIBA will allocate one quota place to its highest ranked team from the NOC, even if it is not in the top three. In case of a draw, the quota will be given to the women’s team.
The two or three (depending on the allocation of the host country seat) NOCs with the highest ranking of each gender on the ranking list will each receive one seat quota for their NOC. However, at this stage no more than two NOCs from the same continent (Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania) can receive a quota.

If the team of the NOC of the host country is not in the top three and receives a quota place, then only two quota places in the corresponding field will be allocated in accordance with the rating list. The ranking list is calculated based on the federation points of each NOC. Points for both genders are awarded based on the sum of the rankings of the top 25 national players in each federation.
Points can be earned up to 12 months before 1 November 2023 and the total only includes the top nine FIBA approved competitions during that period.
Phase 2 – FIBA Universality-driven Olympic 2024 Tournament 1
Eight teams of each gender will take part in the first FIBA Universal Olympic Tournament 2024 (UOQT). The highest-placed NOC for each respective gender will receive one quota seat, and the date and venue of the competition has yet to be confirmed.
Teams participating in this tournament include:
- The host NOC of the UOQT if they have not already qualified on the ranking list.
- Seven (or more if the host NOC has already qualified) the highest ranked NOCs on the ranking list that have not yet qualified.
It is important to note that only NOCs that have not been represented in 5 on 5 basketball (regardless of gender) at the last two Olympic Games are eligible to participate in UOQT 1.
Phase 3 – FIBA Universality-driven Olympic 2024 Tournament 2
The 2024 FIBA Second Olympic Qualifying Tournament (UOQT) will feature eight teams from each gender. The highest-placed NOC in each respective gender will receive one quota seat, and the date and venue of the competition has yet to be confirmed.
The teams participating in this tournament will include:
- The highest-placed NOC in each of the 2023 Continental Cups (Asia and Oceania combined, Americas, Europe and Africa) that has not yet qualified.
- The organizing NOC of the UOQT if it has not already qualified for the Games or UOQT 2.
- The organizing NOC of the Olympic Games (France) if they have not already qualified for the Games or UOQT 2.
If a total of eight teams are not selected, teams will be selected from the top eight NOCs in the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Championship standings that have not yet qualified for the Games.
Phase 4 – FIBA Olympic 2024 Qualifying Tournament
Sixteen teams of each gender will take part in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT). The top three NOCs for each respective gender will each receive one place quota, and the date and venue of the competition has yet to be confirmed.
Teams participating in this tournament include:
- The host NOC of the OQT and the host country of the Olympic Games if they have not already qualified for the Olympic Games or the OQT.
- 14 (or more if the host NOC of the OQT and/or the NOC of the host country of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have already qualified) the highest ranked NOC in the ranking list if they have not already qualified for the Games.
A minimum of two teams of each gender from the same zone must participate in the OQT, with a maximum of 10 teams in total.
The Schedule of Olympic 3×3 Basketball competition
The Olympic 3×3 basketball competition will take place from Tuesday, July 30 to Monday, August 5 at the Place de la Concorde, which will also feature skateboarding, breakdancing and BMX Freestyle competitions.
Teams and athletes to watch in Olympic 3×3 Basketball at Paris 2024
Latvia won the men’s gold medal at Tokyo 2020 by defeating the Republic of China in the final 21-18. The bronze medal went to Serbia and Domović Bulut led them to a 21-14 victory over Belgium.
In the women’s competition, the US emerged as champions and Stephanie Dolson emerged as a star player in an 18–15 victory over the Republic of China. The People’s Republic of China Wang Lili won the bronze medal by beating France 16:14.
However, at the 2022 World Cup in Antwerp, none of the Olympic champions reached the final. In the men’s event, Latvia lost to eventual winners Serbia in the quarter-finals, while Lithuania won silver. Serb Dejan Majstorović, who scored 44 points in the tournament, became the most valuable player.
In the women’s competition, the US lost to Canada in the quarter-finals, while France hosting Paris 2024, led by MVP Laetitia Guapo, won the title by defeating Canada.
