How Does A Human Sensor Work?
Technology is advancing rapidly and the modern world now has solutions to even the gravest problems of humankind. Did one ever think that a machine can detect the presence of a human? Well, that is a fact now as human sensors are installed in varied places to gather data about human presence.
Human sensor is an electronic sensor that can detect the motion of people in industries, offices, malls, and airports. The sensors count the number of people entering and exiting the place. These highly accurate sensors count, store, and transfer the data to the computer. Sensors utilize applications such as automatic doors, lights, anti-theft alarms, etc.
The Working Principle Of A Human Sensor
Human counting sensors are based on recognition technology which identifies, tracks, and counts the number of people passing through the sensor.
The procedure of counting people is done with the following steps :
- Capture of Image
When someone enters a place, the person’s image is captured by the counting sensor.
- Calculator of the Vector Focus Point
After the image of a person is captured, the sensor analyzes the 2D image into a realspace 3D image.
- Recognition of the Human Shape
The next step is recognition of the captured image with the pre-stored shape in the model of humans. If the image matches the shapes, the sensor identifies it as a human figure.
- People Tracking
The sensor follows the person’s track after recognizing a person.
- Data Count
The final step is to count the number of people entering or exiting any place and send the data to the connected computer where you can see them or record the data.
Types Of Human Sensors :
- An active infrared sensor consists of a transmitter and receiver. They transmit Infrared waves on their own. The transmitted waves keep traveling in a straight line, and when a human comes in between the path, the waves traveling back get blocked, and the system signals detect the presence of a human.
- A Passive Infrared sensor measures the changes in temperature of its surroundings on the principle of infrared waves released by the nearby objects. The PIR sensor scans the area and records the heat maps of all the objects in its proximity. If there is any change in the temperature due to the presence of any human, it detects them.
- The microwaves based human sensors consist of two components – a transmitter and a receiver. If someone is in the path of the waves, the waves get distorted, and there is a difference in the data. This indicates the presence of a human within the range of the device.
Benefits Of The Human Sensor :
- COVID-19 has urged the need to follow social distancing. The installation of Human Sensors in public places keeps an eye on the number of people and can take steps to curb the limit of extra people entering.
- People counting sensors have proven beneficial in increasing sales in shopping malls by studying customers’ purchase behavior. The sensors can analyze if people entering the shops are buyers or if they are only for browsing. Shoplifting, a severe offense, can be checked.
- Humans counting sensors help inspect the behavior of the staff in the shop. The owners keep a count of the employees to avoid unnecessary labor costs.
- Marketing campaigns are crucial to earning profit and growth. People counting sensors are an excellent way to measure marketing campaigns’ effectiveness. Big companies compare the data collected during campaigns and promotions.
