Historical Places in Madinah
Madinah, also known as Medina, is a city in the western region of Saudi Arabia, about 400 kilometers north of the holy city of Makkah. It is considered the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah, and it is the burial place of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Madinah is a place of great historical significance, with many sites and landmarks that attract millions of visitors from all around the world every year. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi
Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, also known as the Prophet’s Mosque, is the second holiest mosque in Islam after the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. It was built by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions in the 7th century, and it has since been expanded and renovated several times. The mosque has a capacity of up to one million worshippers and is considered one of the largest mosques in the world. It is also home to the tomb of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), which is located in the Rawdah area, a space between the pulpit and the Prophet’s chamber that is considered a highly sacred area.
Quba Mosque
The Quba Mosque is the oldest mosque in Islam and was built by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself in 622 AD. It is located about 6 kilometers south of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and is considered a highly significant landmark in Islamic history. The mosque has since been expanded and renovated several times, but its original structure still stands today. It is believed that performing prayers in this mosque carries the same reward as performing an Umrah (a minor pilgrimage).
Mount Uhud
Mount Uhud is a mountain range located about 5 kilometers north of Madinah. It is the site of the Battle of Uhud, one of the most significant battles in Islamic history. The battle took place in 625 AD and was fought between the Muslims and the Meccans. The Muslims were initially victorious, but due to a strategic mistake, the Meccans were able to turn the tide of the battle and ultimately win. The battle resulted in the death of several notable companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), including his uncle Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib. Today, visitors can climb to the top of the mountain and visit the site of the battle, which has been marked with a plaque.
Masjid al-Qiblatayn
Masjid al-Qiblatayn is a mosque located in the west of Madinah. It is known for its unique feature of having two qiblas (directions of prayer), one towards Makkah and the other towards Jerusalem. This mosque has great historical significance because it is the place where the direction of prayer was changed from Jerusalem to Makkah during Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) lifetime. The mosque has been renovated and expanded several times over the years, but its original structure still stands.
Al-Baqi’ Cemetery
Al-Baqi’ Cemetery is a historic cemetery located near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. It is the final resting place of several notable companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), including his wife, daughter, and many other companions. It is also the burial place of several of the Prophet’s family members, including his grandson Hasan ibn Ali and his great-grandson Imam Zainul Abideen. The cemetery has been expanded and renovated several times over the years, but it remains a significant landmark for Muslims worldwide.
