High jumper Woo Sang-hyuk wins Seiko Golden Grand Prix silver medal with ‘2m27’
“I’m disappointed with the runner-up finish I’ll try again to jump higher starting tomorrow.”
Korean men’s high jump ‘signature’ Woo Sang-hyuk (28, Yongin City Hall) took second place in the 2024 Seiko Golden Grand Prix men’s high jump.
Sanghyuk Woo recorded 2m27 in the final of the competition held at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan on the 19th.
With this, he took the silver medal, following South Sudanese Australian national Reece Yual (2m30). Woo Sang-hyuk, the champion of this competition last year, was 2cm short of the 2m29 he cleared when he won the championship.
Woo Sang-hyuk received $3,000 (approximately 4.07 million won) as prize money for being the runner-up in the competition.
Woo Sang-hyuk skipped his first target of 2m15, then passed both 2m20 and 2m24 in the first period. He then passed 2m27 in the third period.
Of the 10 players who participated, only Sanghyuk Woo and YuR remained, and while Sanghyuk Woo failed to clear 2m30 all three times, YuR passed it in the second period.
YuR attempted 2m33, but failed all three times. Woo Sang-hyuk, who is maintaining his practical sense for the Paris Olympics, surpassed 2m25 and took first place at the KBS Cup held in Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 3rd of this month. Then, on the 9th, he took second place with 2m31 at the What Gravity Challenge held in Doha, Qatar. Woo Sang-hyuk’s goal of a medal at the Paris Olympics is to surpass his personal best and the Korean record of 2m36 and record 2m37. After the game, Woo Sang-hyuk said through the Korea Athletics Federation, “I ran not bad in the last Qatar competition, but unfortunately I only finished in second place today,” and added, “I will try again starting tomorrow so that I can play well in the next competition.” He added, “My goal, the Paris Olympics, is just around the corner. I will do my best to jump higher at the Olympics.” Meanwhile, Woo Sang-hyuk will participate in the 2024 Taiwan Open tournament held in Taipei, Taiwan on June 1. 19가이드03
