Here’s why Karnataka revoked ban on online gaming
All the fans of fantasy sports are thrilled with the decision that the people of Karnataka will be able to play fantasy cricket and all the other fantasy sports after the Karnataka High Court gave permission to all the fantasy sports organisations to run their business. Previously, the judge of the court considered it to be a part of gambling but Justice Krishna S. Dixit has stated that the judgement will help the state government to form new laws to stop gambling in that region and fantasy sports will no longer be part of the old law.
All the owners of the top fantasy cricket apps will be very happy with the decision as they can once again resume their business in that region. Fantasy Sports will now officially be considered as a skill-based game in Karnataka and that is why the High Court of Karnataka has allowed it to run in the state.
Jay Satya, the lawyer who fought for the development of fantasy sports in Karnataka said, “Games of skill and of chance are different, which has also been ruled previously by the Supreme Court. Once something is categorised as a game of skill, it does not fall under the ambit of gambling, and skill games enjoy constitutional protection of trade and commerce under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution”.
This now means that the people of Karnataka will now be able to enjoy all the various fantasy cricket leagues of the country and win loads of cash in return. They can now compete against the stars of the game like Gautam Gambhir, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar and so many other cricketing stars.
The Bangalore state government will keep a track on the developments that will happen in the world of fantasy sports from now on. However, this was a very necessary step that the court has taken. Roland Landers, the chief executive of all India gaming federation has said, “This is a step in the right direction to grow the gaming industry in the state, and will help unlock the economic potential this sector has. We look forward to working with the government and stakeholders to develop a clear regulatory framework – that will enable legitimate gaming companies to operate in the state with safeguards, while eradicating illegal gambling apps from the state”.
