Global Knives – not cheap but might be an excellent investment
It’s hard to ignore these knives these days – you see them on TV cooking shows, advertised by celebrity chefs and increasingly in the kitchens of enthusiastic home cooks. Global Knife seem to have been overwhelmingly well received by all knowledgeable parts of the cooking world. What excites so much? Why are they perceived as so attractive?
Make Sharp Knives
First off, it’s good to say that there is absolutely nothing really new about making sharp knives. The skills required to make a fine blade have been known for centuries. In fact, the makers of Global knives cite the samurai tradition of sword and blade craftsmanship. So blades can be sharpened – but the problem is keeping them that way.
Global has managed to use advanced stainless steel alloys and use rare metals to create a blade strong enough to be honed to a very sharp profile while being resistant to wear and tear that destroys sharpness.
Acute angle
If you grind the blade at a very steep, acute angle, you can get a blade that is truly extremely sharp and will retain its sharpness even as the initial portion of the cutting edge is removed through wear. The dilemma, of course, is that unless you use an extremely tough material, the fine edge is very vulnerable and will wear out or chip quickly.
Weaker steel needs to be sharpened at a much less acute angle to maintain its strength, and consequently loses its sharpness immediately as it wears.
In addition to alloy technology, Global has used Japanese and other oriental designs to inspire its knives, which is readily apparent by looking at the collection. Additionally, many of the Global series feature hollow handles that are filled with just the right amount of sand during manufacture to create the perfect balance in the hand.
It’s these twin attributes – cutting-edge alloy and balance – that I think make these knives so appealing. The range is also incredibly extensive with all the knives a home cook could possibly want as well as specialty items to appeal to the expert.
However, this creates a dilemma – the choice can be overwhelming, especially if you are new to the range. The question is where exactly to start?
The preferred strategy might be to go for a Global knife set – usually 3 or 7 pieces that give you the basic everyday knives you need. You can then choose to expand on the basics as you see fit. It’s probably the smartest strategy to start with.
Regardless of how you acquire them, individually or as a Global knife set, they don’t come cheap. They represent a significant investment. But it’s not just marketing talk – there’s real quality in it. The investment should be worthwhile – hands off.
Sharpen your culinary skills with global chef knives
The global chef’s knife is, in my humble opinion, a fantastic knife that I’ve had the opportunity to handle recently. There are many pros to the Global knife that I really like, as well as a few tiny cons, but first let’s focus on the pros and why it’s important to have a good set of knives in your kitchen.
A good set of knives within arm’s reach can make the difference between enjoying your work in the kitchen or dreading seeing the same utensils that cause no happiness in your culinary life. Seriously, I used to have the world’s shittiest knives until I realized that a few extra bucks for some great knives would mean the difference between enjoying preparing the food and wanting to run from the kitchen screaming because I don’t want to be there at all.
The global chef’s knife is sharp forged stainless steel and the blade runs through the handle so it feels well balanced and secure. As scary as it may seem to use a super sharp blade instead of a dull crappy blade, if used wisely you will likely be safer using the sharp blade.
It goes without saying that you should use a knife with 100% focus. be very careful Once you start slicing with the global blades you’ll find it goes through like butter and it’s so easy to get things done faster and more efficiently because you’re using a really sharp knife.
These global knives will last you a very long time and will be your best friend in the kitchen provided you keep them sharp and clean them immediately after each use. Watch these videos on how to sharpen the blade of your global chef’s knife. You don’t need a super duper high power machine to sharpen them. A good whetstone or steel will do the trick, but remember to do this after each use and any knife will become dull if you don’t take good care of it.
The only negative thing I can say (and it’s only true if you’re used to global knives buying cheap kitchen appliances) is that you’ll hate that it’s a bit pricey. Invest in a set of global kitchen knives or keep suffering with knives that give you more headache than relief.
