U.S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Football World Cup Team head coach Francis Farberoff has called up 10 players to signify the United States at the Mundialito Gran Canaria 2022 from July 21-23, 2022. 8 of the 10 players were part of the USA’s roster for the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia, run by 2021 Beach Male Player of the Year Nico Perea, who scored 7 total goals at the Cup and Concacaf Beach Championship in his first year with the Beach MNT. The squad also features 3-time Cup veterans Nick Perera- who has scored over 100 worldwide goals- and goalkeeper Chris Toth, who was called Best Goalkeeper at the 2016 Mundialito.
This year marks the 24th version of the Mundialito Beach Soccer competition. The opening competition was held in 1994 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It resumed in 1997 in Portugal and was played there yearly over 2019. Paused for 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 4-team round-robin event moves to Spain for the 1st time. Played under various formats with many World Cup teams in the early years, Brazil leads the way with 14 Mundialito trophies, followed by Portugal with 7 and the USA in 1998 and Spain in 2013 with 1 each. The U.S. will be joining Mundialito 6 times and 1st since 2016. After a 3rd-place finish in 1994, the USA won the FIFA World Cup, topping Group C with wins over Canada, Japan and Italy, before defeating Spain in the quarterfinals, Brazil in the semis and Peru in the final.
Nick Perera is the Beach MNT’s all-time foremost scorer with 103 tallies in 83 career games. Onward Gabriel Silveira led the USA with 7 goals at the 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica and added 2 more at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia. Chris Albiston 2, Fredo Dilbert 2, Chris Toth 2, Conner Rezende and Antonio Chavez also scored at the Concacaf Championship. Chavez, who was another for the team, was named the top player in the regional tournament.
Perera participated in the FIFA World Cup, while Toth took part in 2016 and was called Best Goalkeeper. The USA and Spain past met on the sand in 2018. Spain won 4-3 at the Bahamas Beach Soccer Cup and the USA framed the Europeans by the same 4-3 score at the 2018 Intercontinental Cup in Dubai. The U.S. Men’s Beach Soccer National Football World Cup Team beaten 2015 and 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer Cup champions Portugal 6-5 Friday afternoon in the 2nd match at Mundialito 2022 in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain. Gabriel Silveira recorded in each of the 1st 2 periods, and Antonio Chavez, Chris Albiston, Nico Perea and goalkeeper Chris Toth also tallied as the USA beat the 2nd-ranked team in the world for the 1st time since 1997, ending a 9-game down streak to the European capital.
In the late game, Japan beat Spain 7-2, leaving all 4 teams tied on 3 points heading into World Cup final matches. The USA can win Mundialito with a success over Japan joint with a Portugal win over Spain by the same or some points. Portugal acquired the early lead when Duarte Algarvio finished 1st-time from close range on a quick pass from the left. Gabe Silveira put the USA ahead when he took a pass from Nick Perera, drooled past one defender, and put a shot from the true side by Andrade.
Portugal roared back with 3 quick goals to start the 2nd period, but the USA overcame back. Chris Albiston put away a shot after he stole a ball on the aggressive end, and with 6 seconds left, goalkeeper Chris Toth threw a perfect long pass to Perera on the right, and he rapidly passed to the on-rushing Silveira who hit the upper 90 with less than two seconds left to close the 2nd period tied 4-4 in the Football World Cup.
Having kept the World Cup team in the match with numerous saves, Toth sustained causal to the attack, this time slinging a 25-yard pass to Nico Perea on the left, who drew and renewed the penalty kick. Portugal tied the match on a curling free kick which barely eluded Toth’s out-stretched dive. Toth would get the last word when he altered past his area and volleyed a shot from 28 yards for the victor.
