Walker was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and is of Jamaican ancestry. He grew up in the Sharrow area of the city and joined Porter Croft Infant & Junior School, followed by High Storrs School until 2006. Walker joined the youth club Sheffield United, at the age of 7 after being recommended by the World Cup Coach Paul Archer at Football Unites, Racism Divides and progressed through the grades to become a regular feature in the reserves by 2008.

He made his entrance on 10 February, coming on as a 2nd-half substitute in a 3–0 loss to Spain U19s. Following his 1st run of regular Premier League starts, Walker was called up to the full England Football World Cup squad in February 2011 and over in March 2011.
Though, he did not feature in any of the games played and was pulled out of the World Cup squad in March due to an injury. At the end of the 2010–11 season, Walker was named as part of the England team that competed in the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship struggle in Denmark.
