Fenbendazole For Dogs and Cats
Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole that has broad spectrum anthelmintic activity and is effective against a number of intestinal parasites including giardia, roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) and the Taenia genus of tapeworms. It is also used as a chemotherapy agent for certain parasitic infections in dogs and cats such as pinworms, ascarids, and strongyloides. It is excreted rapidly from the body and has a low potential for interaction with other medications.
Fenbendezole has been shown to have antitumor and cytotoxic activity in both cell culture and animal models. Its mechanism of action overlaps with those of hypoxia-selective nitroheterocyclic chemotherapeutics and radiosensitizers. We evaluated the effect of a maximally intensive regimen of fenbendazole and docetaxel in EMT6 mammary tumor cells, both aerobic and hypoxic. Cells treated with fenbendazole and docetaxel showed additive cytotoxic effects, and the clonogenicity of these cultures was lower than that of controls.
The question of whether fenbendazole is safe for humans has been raised in light of the Joe Tippens Protocol cancer treatment method. The research to date is limited but suggests that fenbendazole may be safe for humans at low doses.
A commonly prescribed dewormer for dogs and cats is fenbendazole, sold under the brand names Panacur and Safe-Guard. It is an FDA-approved medication that is administered orally for a period of several days. It can be given to puppies after they are weaned and to adult pets at a regular interval or when they have parasites.
Pet owners should talk to their veterinarians about the best parasite control and deworming schedule for their animals. Vaccinations and preventative medications are important as well, and the veterinarian can recommend specific products for your pet’s unique needs.
