Exploring the Foundations of Advaita Vedanta: Vedantasara Part 1 | HUA
This course aims to clear up some misunderstandings about Advaita Vedanta, a popular philosophy in India. Students will explore questions like, “Is the world unreal?”, “Is Advaita a pessimistic philosophy?”, and “Is it only for monks?”. Through the study of Vedantasara, an original Sanskrit text by Sadananda, students will form their own perspectives on Advaita Vedanta.
Vedantasara of Sadananda – Part 1 is the first course of a two-part sequence that systematically introduces Advaita Vedanta using the Vedantasara text. It’s a good entry-level text that’s prescribed for graduate-level study in India. The course covers about half of the text, while the second course will cover the remaining portion.
You don’t need prior knowledge of Sanskrit or Vedanta philosophy to take this course. You’ll receive a PDF file of the main text in Devanagari and Roman script, as well as supplementary reading material. This course is also an initiation into the Sanskrit language.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to distinguish the fundamentals of Advaita Vedanta philosophy, understand technical Sanskrit terms, evaluate Advaita’s view on renunciation, discuss the four mahavakyas, and demonstrate interest in other Darshanas like Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya, and Vaisheshika.
The class structure includes at least one contact hour per week, with discussions and debates based on self-study and reflection. While the content is concluded within 60 minutes, discussions can continue for an additional 30 minutes. You’ll be required to complete one assignment at the end of the course, and a model question paper will be provided for guidance.
Overall, this course is a great way to explore the fascinating world of Advaita Vedanta and gain a deeper understanding of life’s fundamental questions.
