Reasons for hair loss or low density beard?
The primary causes are as below:
- Hereditary: Hair loss or patchy beard runs in the bloodline, so if your father or grandfather had a poor beard there are chances that your beard may also be sparse or witness hair loss.
- Hormones: Poor testosterone levels can also lead to a sparse beard. Also, theimpact of hormones is related to weaker blood supply in the cheek area in few people leading to inappropriate nourishment and less hormonal control in that area resulting in hair loss or patchy beard.
- Lifestyle changes:Healthy lifestyle is requirement for staying fit is true for fitness of your hairs too. Stress, Poor nutrition, biotin and niacin lacking diet contribute to lack of hair growth on the beard area.
Beard Hair transplant:
The primary underlying principle in Beard Hair transplant remains same as scalp hair where in hair follicles from the donor area mainly back and side of the head or from under the chin are extracted and then transplanted to the bald patches in the beard. A full dense beard requires almost 2500 hair grafts. It is a highly aesthetic procedure because due care has to be taken regarding the angulation, alignment and spacing of hair grafts otherwise there are chances of vertical angulation which might lead to a disastrous look, thus, it is extremely crucial that the surgeon and clinic should have strong expertise to perform the procedure. There are two methods to harvest the graft from the donor area:
- FUT (Follicular unit transplantations or strip technique):
- This technique involves extracting a thin strip of tissues along with hair follicles from the donor area, strip size is less than 10-15 mm. Then this strip is dissected under high grade microscope to isolate the follicles which are then transplanted at the slits prepared at the bald site.
- FUE (Follicular unit extraction):
- This technique involves extracting singular follicles instead of a strip using a small punch like device, the follicles so extracted are then transplanted at bald site.
Which technique to choose is actually a decision which only your surgeon can make and in some cases depends on the number of follicular grafts, patchy area and density of hair in the donor area. FUE hair transplant technique is usually preferred for beard hair transplant as the number of grafts requires are around 2500 grafts.
Precaution taken before and after beard hair transplant:
Before surgery:
- Avoid Blood thinners like aspirin 10 days prior to the procedure.
- Avoid Anti inflammatory drugs 3 days before the transplant.
- Do not consume Alcohol or smoke3 days before the transplant.
Post surgery:
- Washing of face should be avoided until the crust formed around newly transplanted follicles falls off (it normally takes 5 days).
- Antibiotics should be taken as prescribed by surgeon to avoid infection.
- Transplanted area should be kept dry for 5 days after the procedure.
- Shaving should be avoided for a week or 10 days after the procedure as instructed by surgeon.
Hair transplant procedures if performed by an experienced surgeon are largely complication free or without any major side effects. Same goes with beard hair transplant, there are no major side effects however, there could be some minor reaction in the form of some bruising, swelling at the donor or bald site or redness or may be ingrown hair. Lastly hair transplant cost in India is extremely pocket friendly given the quality of treatment available and is slightly higher than the scalp hair transplant because it is a finer procedure.
