England vs Wales – What is England’s biggest win and what is largest win in a Football World Cup match
Everyone knows that England’s best Football World Cup game was in 1966 when they lifted the trophy at Wembley. Since then, the Three Lions have endured many disappointments, including elimination in the semi-finals of the tournament in Russia in 2018.

What is England’s biggest victory?
The biggest victory of the Three Lions came in 1882. England beat Ireland 13–0 on 18 February 1882 in a friendly in which Arthur Brown scored four and Howard Woton scored five. In 1889 they beat Ireland again 13-2. Since then there have been great successes against San Marino with an 8-0 win in March 2013 and a 10-0 win on 15 November 2021 when Harry Kane broke four.
A ten-goal triumph helped Gareth Southgate qualify for the Football World Cup in Qatar. And it was their biggest win since they scored ten points against the USA in 1964. Ten victories were also achieved against the Netherlands in 1907 with a score of 12:2. The following year, England beat Austria 11:1, and in 1947 beat Portugal 10 times unanswered. England beat Luxembourg 9-0 in 1960 and 1982 and achieved the same result against Switzerland in 1909.
What is England’s biggest winning margin at a Football World Cup finals?
England beat Panama 6-1 at the 2018 Football World Cup in Russia thanks to Kane’s hat-trick. In 2022, they recorded their best ever in the first leg, defeating Iran 6-2. Before Russia, the Three Lions had never won by more than three goals in the world’s biggest tournament. They won 3-0 over Denmark (2002), Paraguay and Poland (both 1986).
Of course, England have scored more than three goals in Football World Cups before, most notably in the 1966 final, after extra time. England beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley thanks to a hat-trick by Jeff Hurst and one by Martin Peters.
What is the biggest win by any team at a Football World Cup?
The biggest advantage in the Football World Cup final is NINE. This has been done three times – most recently in 1982 when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1. Hungary beat South Korea 9-0 in 1954 and Yugoslavia beat Zaire by the same score in 1974. However, the biggest lead in the qualifying match is very different.
In April 2001, Australia faced American Samoa in a 2002 World Cup qualifier (ocean zone). Australia emerged victorious 31–0, with Archie Thompson breaking the record for most goals scored by an individual player with 13.
Why Wales striker Kieffer Moore is underrated in every way
Gareth Bale made headlines for Wales vs USA, but for me the story of their evening was Kiefer Moore. Of course, I didn’t want anyone other than Bale to convert our penalty when the score was 1-0 and with less than 10 minutes to go. It was such a tense situation and he handled it to even the score.
However, it was Moore who changed the rules of the game for us. I was very surprised that he didn’t start against the US, but considering this performance, I would have been completely stunned if he hadn’t made it into the match against Iran on Friday.
The Bournemouth striker made an immediate impact after entering the field in the second half. His first participation was to take the ball to his chest and then run down the channel. He got us up on the field for about 40 yards and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Moore is underrated in every way
Moore has given us a trick we’ve been missing, but he’s not just standing in the middle of the field waiting for the ball to be thrown at him. Speaking as a centre-back who has faced him, I can tell you what a handful he has to deal with and how much he is underestimated in every aspect of his game.
I played against him in the league in 2019 when I was at Bristol City and he was at Wigan. He didn’t score against me – obviously I wasn’t going to let that happen! – but that’s exactly what I thought: Soon he will be in the Premier League, and I was right.
For starters, Moore is 6ft 5in, but he’s a lot more agile than you’d expect he can drop his wings and run with a ball under pressure. His first touch is also great. As he showed against the USA, he will hold the ball wherever he is and he is very clever in his play. For more know about Football World Cup Tickets.
You saw it in his participation in the movement that led to our penalty. He’s so neat and tidy in the corner and holds the ball until he gets a lift. And if in the first half we sent the balls forward, and he came right back, then when we did it after the break, Moore was always there.
He was more involved with Bale and Aaron Ramsey because they could get on the field and be sure the ball would stick, and also fed our cornerbacks, Neko Williams and Connor Roberts. It helped every part of the team. The defense could give a breather and the midfield could be strengthened, although I still think this is an area where we need to improve our game against Iran.
Allen’s return is key
It’s weird that you can look at a draw in two different ways, depending on how you got it. USA will feel like they lost that game after missing out so late while we ended on such a positive note – the point was huge for our chances of making it to the Round of 16 and we have some momentum. . I am delighted with all this.
However, we can’t ignore the fact that we started the game so badly. We were absolutely terrible and it was one of the worst halves I have seen in Wales as a player or expert. Moore changed the way we reacted, but the way we started showed what a big miss Joe Allen was.
He wasn’t fit enough to play on Monday and hasn’t played since he suffered a hamstring injury in mid-September, but I’m sure he’ll make the Iran game because we need him. Without him, the US completely dominated midfield in the first half and I don’t think they will score with Allen on the pitch.
Their move came right in the middle, and with Allen’s ability to be in the right place at the right time and hold space instead of marking the player, he would have spotted the danger and protected that key area in the middle.
If he doesn’t survive then we should consider another play option next to Ethan Ampadu and back us up a bit and then see how the game goes. I hope we can do what England did against Iran and have consistent possession and attack waves. Then we could release someone like Ramsey and he could work in the opposition’s half.
I would also ask if we need five backs this time. Yes, Iran has scored against England twice, so they will be a threat, but all the Wales defenders are comfortable in the four and that would give us an extra player up the field.
What next? A must-win game
Iran is a game that we must win, so we must treat it like we are going to win it.
“I think we can safely watch England dismantle them. The boys won’t take Iran lightly, but this game showed that if you play at the forefront in this way, keep a positive attitude and dominate possession, then Iran is ready to win.”
We have always aimed to go into the match with England with four points in the asset, so we have a good chance of achieving this goal. That would mean we are still in the process of qualifying from the group and at half time against the USA I didn’t think I’d say that.
