Shocking warning to football fans travelling for World Cup leaves England supporters furious
England fans are furious after football fans heading to Qatar for the Football World Cup received a shocking warning. Foreign Secretary James Cleverley was criticized today for giving advice to members of the LGBT community who plan to cheer for the Three Lions.
Homosexuality is prohibited in Qatar and is punishable by up to three years in prison. When asked about gay fans, Mr Cleverly said today: One of the things I would like to say to football fans is please be respectful of the host country.
“They are trying to make sure people can be themselves and enjoy football. I think with a little flexibility and compromise on both sides, it could be a safe and secure Football World Cup.”
LGBT people and their allies have taken to social media to criticize the disgusting and inconsiderate comments. One person was outraged: apart from the completely wrong tone, if I (God forbid) really wanted to go and watch football in Qatar with my male partner, I would not have the slightest idea what exactly we need to “compromise”. on not to be arrested.
Empty and offensive. Another added: What does that even mean, James Cleverly? How exactly can LGBTQ football fans compromise? And what compromises will Qatar make? A third said: I have absolutely no interest in football, but the idea that LGBTQ+ fans have to ‘compromise’ their existence in order to ‘respect’ an authoritarian regime that ignores human rights is appalling. James Cleverly, you should be ashamed of yourself.
This comes after Qatar Football World Cup chief Nasser Al Khater insisted that gay supporters be able to hold hands throughout the demonstration, which runs from November 20 to December 18. He was adamant that no gays would be discriminated against in this regard. Al Khater added: All we ask for is respect for the culture.
“After all, if you don’t do anything that harms other people, if you don’t destroy public property, as long as you behave in a non-harmful way, then everyone is welcome and you have nothing to worry about.”
In the meantime, heterosexual couples are also getting warnings about their behavior. Fans caught having a one-night stand in Qatar World Cup could face jail as extramarital affairs could lead to seven years in prison. FIFA has warned that a tough approach will be taken to ban casual sex at the winter tournament in this strict Arab country.
A British police source told the Daily Star: Sex is almost off the menu, unless you come as a husband and wife couple. There will definitely not be one-day tournaments in this tournament. There will be no real party. Everyone needs to keep them in mind, unless they want to risk being stuck in jail. In fact, this year’s Football World Cup is the first time a ban on sex has been in effect. Fans need to be ready.
