England Vs USA – Harry Maguire left in no doubt over England role after more Gareth Southgate talks
The Manchester United captain has lost his place at Old Trafford this season under Eric ten Hag and has struggled during England’s recent Nations League fixtures, but remains a key man for Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate. Gareth Southgate will give his full support to Harry Maguire ahead of the Football World Cup.

Southgate has already publicly stated how important he considers the Manchester United defender to Qatar World Cup. And Southgate has left Maguire in no doubt about how strong his backing is, effectively guaranteeing he will be selected for the tournament despite his troubles at club level.
United captain Maguire lost his place at Old Trafford under new boss Erik ten Hag and is also currently recovering from an injury he sustained for the international team last month. But while Southgate can’t make any guarantees other than a Football World Cup, the England manager is in regular contact with key players and Maguire knows his international manager has his full backing.
It will be a welcome boost for Maguire at a difficult time, but should also boost his self-confidence as he looks to get back in shape and regain his form. Southgate has made it clear that players must play regularly for their clubs to be selected for the England squad, but sees Maguire as a special case due to his importance to the team.
“Southgate said publicly last month: why are we choosing it, because he is one of the players who gives us the best chance of winning.”
Central defense is a key area for Southgate as Maguire is out and John Stones is also recovering from a hamstring problem. But Southgate sees Maguire as the leader and, as a key player at the 2018 Football World Cup and last year’s Euro, he is well behind the central midfielder as he prepares to select his team on 10 November.
Stu Holden fears for USA Football World Cup team
Former USMNT linebacker Stu Holden expressed potential concerns about the team’s Football World Cup chances after they saw several predicted players miss training camp last month with injuries. Timothy Weah, Yunus Musa and Anthony Robinson were absent from the USMNT friendly matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia, as were defensemen Chris Richards and Cameron-Carter Vickers.
And while everyone but Richards has since returned to the field, Holden still worries about a world in which Gregg Berhalter doesn’t have his preferred XI at his disposal, but understands that all countries deal with injuries. In terms of talent, if everyone was in shape, I feel very confident in this team. If not, I’m a little more concerned that they didn’t have reps, Holden told DailyMail.com at a Fox Sports press conference on Thursday.
You’ll be playing with partners who haven’t played together, especially in central defence, perhaps a striker who hasn’t worked with other wingers and a goalkeeper who, we don’t know, will be Turner or Steffen. Following an Achilles injury sustained by Miles Robinson in May, centre-back Walker Zimmerman has been called into question.
Richards may have been Berhalter’s preferred option with better fit and conditioning, although Aaron Long now looks to be the frontrunner partnered with Zimmerman after returning from his own Achilles injury last season. For more know about Football World Cup Tickets.
However, Long has had over a year between national team starts and has not had enough time to merge with Zimmermann, while teething issues up front are possible as Berhalter’s preferred selection has not yet been fully determined. While this will be the first autumn/winter Football World Cup and players like Weah, Musa and Robinson will want to arrive healthy in Qatar, Holden said anything short of playing hard in the remaining weeks is a wrong move.
“As an athlete, it’s really hard for me to turn off and say, you know what, the next three weeks that I’m going to go through, I’m going to take it easy because I don’t want to get hurt, said Holden, who is in Qatar as a Fox TV presenter. I think that’s when you really hurt.”
You also have to consider that you want to arrive at the Football World Cup in good shape: physical, healthy, mental. I think you can see the difference in that you may not go out. Maybe you won’t have extra drinks at dinner. Off the field, you do what you need to do to rest and prepare. But on the field, you have to control what you can control, which is to play hard and make sure you arrive at the tournament in the best possible way.
Holden definitely has experience preparing for a tournament. In March 2010, Holden broke his leg, but miraculously recovered in time to be part of the USMNT team at the World Championships in June of that year in South Africa – although, as he now says, not quite 100 percent.
“I had this carrot that was bigger than any carrot I have eaten in my life to come back and be healthy. Because they almost took it away from me, making a childhood dream come true – to play at the World Championships. So it fueled my rehab, fueled my diet, fueled everything I did to get back.”
And while none of the exhausted USMNT players struggle with injuries on the scale that Holden has, some guys will certainly have to overcome the pain barrier. Apart from Weah, Mousa and Robinson, the former two of whom did not start for their clubs after missing the last training camp, Gio Reyna left the friendly against Saudi Arabia due to injury.
However, the creative, often-injured midfielder has since returned to the field for Borussia Dortmund, and another former USMNT midfielder (and Fox employee) expects him to break through in Qatar Football World Cup if he remains relatively unpunished until November.
This is the Football World Cup, you will do whatever it takes, Maurice told Edu to Daily Mail. There will be pain, unless your leg is broken, unless there are bones hanging from your leg, you will find a way to play in the Qatar World Cup. I think if it’s a minor hit, if it’s something you can get through, the guys will get through it, because that’s what you dreamed about as a kid, that was your ultimate goal.
Although Holden managed to recover for the 2010 tournament, he was also somewhat disappointed to play a minor role. However, his view of this unique tournament should be an encouragement to those on the fringes of the team. It’s a Football World Cup bigger than ever [where] you’re going to need everything, he said, not just your 14 or 15 guys that you think are your best players.
Arsenal boss Arteta hails ‘improving’ USMNT star Turner: He was phenomenal
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has praised Matt Turner after starting as goalkeeper for the US men’s team in the Europa League. Turner was one of the highlights in Arsenal’s victory over Bodo/Glimt despite only having to make one official save that day. The goalkeeper moved quickly from his line, helping to prevent several dangerous sequences before they approached his box.
“He’s getting better, he’s getting better, obviously we’re not asking him for what the other managers have asked him, Arteta said. In my opinion, he was much better in the first half than in the second. We could have had more control but I think he was phenomenal in scoring in situations, especially when defending the area behind the centre-backs and in one-on-one situations, he was really good.”
The matchup is another major event in Turner’s history as he looks to secure the starting position for the USMNT at the World Championship. He’ll have a few more matches to play before heading to Qatar Football World Cup, where Turner is firmly established as Arsenal’s cup keeper.
Arsenal are set to visit Leeds United this weekend in the Premier League, but Turner is unlikely to face USMNT teammates Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams. He will most likely reappear on 20 October when Arsenal host PSV in the Europa League.
