Away from politics, Doha’s population’s expectations are rising. Yasmian Ghanem, a member of the Qatar golf team, sat in a cafe in the tourist area of Souq Waqif and said “fans will have a great time” in the state. Football fans in Qatar, meanwhile, are watching the form of the national team. After so much money, many are dying to see the host country at least in the group stage.
But the Asian champions are the lowest ranked team in their group – 50th in the world – against the Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador. The opening gala against Ecuador (44th) is considered an early competitive game as the Qataris dream of emulating South Korea’s semi-final feat when they helped host the 2002 tournament.
Christian Gourcuff, former manager of Al-Gharafa club, said that Qatar has invested phenomenal resources in the preparation of the national team. But beyond striker Akram Afif, he believes they lack an international dimension that could cost Qatar their Football World Cup ambitions.
