10. Wayne Rooney (11 Appearances)
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney tops our list with 11 Football World Cup appearances for England. His FIFA World Cup debut came in 2006, but that may not be Rooney’s fondest memory considering he received a red card during the quarter-finals for an alleged stamp on Portuguese Ricardo Carvalho. His only World Cup goal came against England, who lost 2-1 to Uruguay in the 2014 group match. However, Rooney will be remembered as one of England’s greatest strikers as he played in three World Cups.
9. Michael Owen (12 Appearances)
Next on the list is another big name in English football, Michael Owen. On his Football World Cup debut in 1998, he became England’s youngest international and the tournament’s youngest goalscorer. His performances there brought him international recognition as he scored twice, including the famous miracle goal against Argentina. Owen then scored in his next three majors for England, including twice at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first and only player to score in four consecutive majors for England.
8. Gary Lineker (12 Appearances)
On par with Owen in terms of appearances is Gary Lineker, who also boasts 12 Football World Cup caps. Lineker was an MBE and accomplished off the pitch, but he will be remembered at this tournament for the glory he brought to the Three Lions by scoring 10 goals in 12 matches, more than any England player in the FIFA World Cup. Lineker won the Golden Boot for most World Cup goals in the 1986 tournament where he scored six goals for his country on his World Cup Football debut.
7. Steven Gerrard (12 Appearances)
Steven Gerrard is seventh on the list, having also made 12 Football World Cup appearances for England. Gerrard was originally scheduled to make his debut at the 2002 tournament, but was pulled due to injury. As the 2006 FIFA World Cup approached, Gerrard more than made up for it, scoring twice in the group stage to become England’s top scorer this year – quite a feat for a man in his shoes. The midfielder will be the centerpiece of England’s 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
6. David Beckham (13 Appearances)
Perhaps the most recognizable name on the list, David Beckham is the sixth highest scoring player of all time. Beckham participated in three world championships: in 1998, 2002 and 2006. During these performances, he spared England a lot of color, especially with his memorable free-kick ability. Beckham also became the first player to score in three Football World Cups.
5. Bobby Moore (14 Appearances)
Bobby Moore captained England in the 1966 Football World Cup, which won the tournament in one of his country’s proudest moments. Moore was known as one of the finest defenders to ever grace the sport and captained West Ham for over a decade. He also competed at the 1962 and 1970 World Cups, but he will always be remembered for lifting the famous trophy at Wembley.
4. Ashley Cole (14 Appearances)
Next on our list is Ashley Cole who made 14 appearances at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Although he played a decisive role in all performances, one of the highlights was his performance in the second round of the 2006 tournament when he blocked a critical shot from Ecuador’s Carlos Tenorio to save the game for England, who won 1–0. . In terms of personal achievement, a special moment for Cole should be winning the England Player of the Year award in 2010.
3. Bobby Charlton (14 Appearances)
Adding to the list is another member of the glorious 1966 Football World Cup team, Bobby Charlton, who made 14 appearances in three World Cups. Often considered one of the best English players of all time, Charlton scored four goals during his FIFA World Cup run. At the time of his retirement from England, Charlton had made 106 appearances for the side, at the time the record for the most capped player in the team’s history. 2. Terry Butcher (14 Appearances)
Another contender for the title of England’s greatest defender appears in Terry Butcher. Butcher was the captain of the national team and competed in three tournaments: the 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Championships. The Butcher will be remembered for his tough, serious style of play. Although lesser known than many on this list, Butcher’s legacy will be remembered particularly fondly by Ipswich Town fans, where he began his career and made 271 caps from 1976 to 1986.
1. Peter Shilton (17 Appearances)
And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, England’s top scorer at the Football World Cup on our list: Peter Shilton. Shilton is the only goalkeeper to make the list, which really proves his talent in this position. He made his World Championship debut in 1982 and then competed at the 1986 and 1990 World Championships.
In those 17 matches, Shilton kept clean sheets in 10 of those games, tying the world championship clean sheet record with France’s Fabien Barthez. In addition to his Football World Cup prowess, Shilton also boasts an impressive league record of over 1,000 appearances and over 100 games played for five separate teams.
From the international stage to local club rivalries, Shilton has inspired millions of people around the world and still holds the record for most appearances in world football, having played in 1,390 matches during his 30-year career.
USMNT Assembles Pre-Football World Cup Camp for MLS-Based Players
Those who still qualify for a trip to Qatar, but whose clubs did not make the playoffs, are gathering to keep fit for the Football World Cup. A small group of FIFA World Cup hopefuls will begin gathering in Frisco, Texas on Tuesday as the US officially travels to Qatar with a “fitness camp” for MLS off-season players.
Nine people are on Coach Gregg Berhalter’s initial roster, with more likely to come based on the results of this weekend’s two conference finals. The camp will run until November 5, the date of the MLS Cup final. The 26-man line-up will then be announced on November 9, with training in Al Rayyan, Qatar starting on November 14.
The nine players invited to Frisco are:
Goalkeeper: Gabriel Slonina (Chicago Fire/Chelsea)
Defenders: Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Shaq Moore (Nashville SC), DeAndre Yedlin (Inter Miami), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)
Midfielders: Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders)
Forwards: Paul Arriola (FC Dallas), Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders)
Everyone, except Slonina, participated in the qualification of the World Championship among the Americans, which ended at the end of March. The 18-year-old is unlikely to make the Football World Cup team, but he was invited to train with US coaches during his move from Fire to Chelsea.
The only real Qatar Football World Cup candidates still in the MLS playoffs are Los Angeles linebacker Kellyn Acosta and New York City goaltender Shawn Johnson. Berhalter decided to make the camp somewhat exclusive by excluding those MLS players who are on the edge of the American pool but don’t seem to be on Qatar’s shortlist.
Among those who may have harbored faint hopes for a Qatar World Cup at some point during qualifying, or missed a chance to prove their worth this spring, are Sebastian Lletget (Dallas), Gyasi Zardes (Colorado Rapids), Brandon Vasquez (Cincinnati), Eric Williamson (Portland Timbers), Jeremy Abobiss (San Jose Earthquakes) and George Mihajlovic (Montreal/Alkmaar).
