Different Types of NOAA Raster Nautical Charts

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) nautical charts portray water depths, coastlines, landmarks, aids to navigation, regulatory, tide, and other information. All the charts made by NOAA are based on and have the same appearance as the “traditional” paper charts that Coast Survey has provided since the early 19th century for U.S. waters. They contain all critical corrections published in notices to mariners since its last new edition, as well as any newly compiled routine changes.

The US government no longer prints paper NOAA nautical charts, however, NOAA provides digital images of the charts to certified Print on Demand (POD) dealers such as Paradise Cay Publications. The mariner can purchase the NOAA nautical paper charts from these dealers. The certified agents such as Paradise Cay Publications ensure that the NOAA charts are printed with appropriate quality and scale to meet U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) chart carriage requirements. In fact, only the paper NOAA nautical chart printed by NOAA certified agents are accepted by the USCG (United States Coast Guard) as meeting chart carriage requirements for commercial vessels.

Paradise Cay offers NOAA nautical charts certified for carriage in two formats, one is printed on paper. Paradise Cay uses a heavy 170gsm paper which is water resistant, these charts are meant for navigation but are worthy of display. They are printed on state-of-the-art large format printers at high quality for crisp clear resolution and vivid colors. While these NOAA nautical chart are certified for the bridge, many are hung on the wall of the mariner’s stateroom.

The other variation of NOAA nautical chart we offer which is certified for carriage is our waterproof version. This is a durable chart printed on a poly material which is impervious to water. We do not recommend that you fold this chart but it can be plotted on in light pencil and erased. This chart will last for years in a damp environment.

In addition to the charts which are approved for carriage Paradise Cay offers decorative and reference charts printed at different sizes. Our small format NOAA nautical charts is very popular for reference, full size charts are cumbersome, small format charts while not printed to scale are a perfect reference for planning while navigation on a small electronic navigation screen. Printed on our waterproof material this chart is tough and will withstand the rigors of life at sea.

Sometimes even a small format NOAA nautical charts is too big, that is why we offer booklet charts, and these are complete charts made into a small booklet. Very handy for planning, also nice for a library collection, printed at 8.5” X 11” they store nicely on a bookshelf or even in a binder.

For those who are looking to make a statement we offer our large format chart option. These NOAA nautical charts are printed at 42” on the small side. Printed on our high quality 170 GSM paper and printed in high resolution, with crisp colors and clear resolution. NOAA CUSTOM CHART – NEW FROM NOAA

NOAA is phasing out paper charts in their current format, but they are substituting with a new system which allows users to select any area and create a chart of that area. This is still in development; we will offer more information later.
