Every festival has its own significance, customs, and traditions to follow. Diwali being the festival of light falls in Kartik month on the day of Amavasya. People celebrate Rama’s victory over Ravana, and with each Diwali celebration, it signifies how right always wins over wrong and good over bad.
There are many legends related to the day; however, the celebration always has things in common. Let’s discuss these W customs here and how people rejoice on Diwali.
The Lights and Lamps
This is the most important aspect of celebrating Diwali. No Diwali is complete if you don’t fill up your home with illumination. Lighting soil Diyas fuelled with mustard oil and cotton wick holds the utmost significance since this is eco-friendly. Lighting up soil diyas also makes us buy them from the diya makers, which is a way to help those poor people.
However, in addition to diyas, people also use fairy lights or light string to make the environment even more vivid. There are colorful light strings; each one comes with a remote so you can light them up in the pattern you want.
As Diwali falls on Amavasya, lighting up the home is said to ward off the negativity and evil powers as many people perform tantras and to takas on this day.
Lakshmi Puja
In every Hindu household, Goddess Laxmi is worshipped on the night of Diwali. It is believed that worshipping Laxmi on this occasion has high significance as she visits Earth and homes. That is why to welcome the Goddess, people also clean and paint their homes. Mata Laxmi blesses the household with prosperity, good luck, and growth. So, to seek her blessings, people recite Laxmi Arti and worship her using Kapoor and Diya.
Rangoli
Diwali is a festival where the decoration of homes is important. People decorate their homes in many ways, and one such way is crafting Rangoli. These are colorful patterns made on the floor using different colors that are easily available in the market, especially in Diwali time.
You may also use colorful chalks if colors are not readily available. Decorate your courtyard, entrances, Puja room, hall, and more areas to welcome Goddess Laxmi.
Firecrackers
Bursting firecrackers is another must on Diwali. For decades, people buy firecrackers as it is joyous to hear the exploding and see its illumination all around. Some crackers only do the illumination instead of exploding. People prefer different crackers as per their choice because these also tend to ward off evil spirits.
However, these days, there are some restrictions on exploding firecrackers, which is right in the way because these crackers also do a lot of noise pollution, and sometimes hurt the animals too. That is why this Diwali, buy the crackers that spread the light instead of noise.
Worshipping Cattle
This is more common in villages and small towns as people there are dependent on their cattle. Their animals are the primary source of their finances, and hence, on Diwali, they worship their cattle.
Cows are considered equal to God; worshipping cows is like worshipping all Gods together in Hinduism. In the Southern parts of India, people also consider cows as the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi.
Invitation to Relatives and Exchanging Gifts
It is a common practice on Diwali to invite your relatives and friends to your home. People exchange gifts with one another, or they parcel gifts to someone who lives overseas. They distribute sweets, prepare special dishes, and savor it with their loved ones. Hence Diwali Festival also becomes a festival to improve your relations and to understand the importance of people in your life.
The Most Common Legend
Diwali is mainly celebrated because, on this day, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile with their brother Laxman and wife Sita. They returned to their Rajya after killing Ravana, who kidnapped Mata Sita during their exile.
