Anemic patients will be given iron supplements in the form of pills, syrups or injections. These supplements are meant to strengthen our body. However, some of the iron infusion injections cause severe side effects leading to legal issues. One such drug is Injectafer iron replacement injection, which faces Injectafer lawsuits in the recent past.
Injectafer is the only intravenous iron supplement with the ferric carboxymaltose compound, which causes Hypophosphatemia (HPP). Along with this adverse side effect, patients who took the two doses of Injectafer injection, encountered breathing difficulty, dizziness, fever, headaches, nausea, and hypertension and so on.
Injectafer got its FDA approval after much trials and rejections. Soon after the introduction into the market for pediatric patients, it started facing allegations of causing Hypophosphatemia. It is a medical condition where our blood phosphate levels become low leading to muscle and bone weakness.
Many studies linked the Hypophosphatemia issues and Injectafer underlining the allegations of the victims. The lawsuits alleged that the manufacturers, having known the adverse side effects kept it secret from the public.
Only after the warning from the FDA, the warning about Hypophosphatemia was included in the label in 2020. More than a hundred Injectafer lawsuits were consolidated under the US District Judge Wendy Beetlestone and some of the lawsuits were chosen for bellwether trials in 2023.
Katherine Crockett’s lawsuit scheduled for June 5, 2023 trial was stayed for the time being and it diminished the hopes of the victims.
Let us hope that the wind would change in favor of the plaintiffs at least in 2024.
