Buying a Space Heater
A space heater is a great solution for heating a single room or small area and works well as supplemental heat, complementing your home’s existing heat system. They can also be used to keep work areas warm and comfortable, especially if an employee is unable to maintain a desired body temperature for medical reasons (with proper documentation).
Space heaters come in many shapes and sizes and use different heating methods and techniques to create heated air. Some are fan-forced, while others are ceramic or infrared and can operate quietly. They’re available as portable and floor-standing units, or they can be mounted to the wall. Some are designed as bathroom heaters and include special safety and design features to operate safely in damp environments, including ALCI plugs that cut power immediately upon contact with water.
Some of the most effective models have a thermostat that allows you to set and maintain a desired temperature, saving energy usage by not constantly switching it on and off. Other useful features can include a timer, which lets you set when you want the heater to turn on so that you’re not waking up to a cold home, and an automatic shut-off feature that turns off the unit when it’s been switched off for an extended period of time.
All electric space heaters require a direct electrical connection to be powered, so make sure they’re plugged directly into a wall receptacle, not a power strip or extension cord, and that they’re out of foot traffic paths where they can be tripped over or knocked over. Keep them away from flammable fabrics, and periodically check for worn or frayed electrical cords. space heater
