Certificate Program in Bhagavad Gita Through Sanskrit (BGTS) – Beginner Phase
Program Description: The Certificate Program in Bhagavad Gita Through Sanskrit – Beginner Phase is designed as a 4-quarter (1 year) sequence, with each quarter comprising 1.5 credit hours. The program is structured to offer a total of 60 hours of instruction, with an additional 120 hours of self-study.
This beginner phase of the BGTS program is the first of three successive phases – Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced – that together comprise the BGTS. It is aimed at students of all ages, from 9th grade onward, and assumes no prior knowledge of the Sanskrit language. The only prerequisite is that students should be familiar with the devanAgari script. The course is taught in English and is easily accessible to a global audience.
The Beginner Phase of the BGTS program is an in-depth 44-week study that prepares beginner-level students to achieve a level of comfort with the Sanskrit language that will enable them to study the sacred Hindu text Bhagavad Gita with ease. The course is suitable for high school students and adults who have a passion to learn the Bhagavad Gita through a new language and are keen to engage with the texts and literature of Hinduism and its numerous derivative knowledge systems. The course is taught by dedicated HUA faculty members, using a user-friendly online platform that features a learning model that uses live virtual classrooms.
Learning Objectives: The primary objective of the Beginner Phase of the BGTS program is to help students relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 and 2 of the Geeta, students will be able to:
- Use pronouns, persons, and numbers
- Recognize common Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases
- Discover building blocks of the language through simple everyday conversation
- Understand the use of the 2nd and 6th case-endings and words ending with a vowel
- Identify and use verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms according to the tenses
- Use prefixes, suffixes, and indeclinables
- Recognize additional Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases
- Further imbibe building blocks of the language through everyday conversation
- Understand the use of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and vocative case-endings
- Continue practicing more with verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms, tenses
- Use appropriate case endings for prepositions
- Distinguish between close sounding letters in conjuncts
- Practice different forms of adjectives and substantives
- Learn gender as applied to cardinal and ordinal numbers
- Understand declensions for consonant ending nouns
- Research grammatical aspects of Bhagavad Gita chapter 1 and 2
Program Structure: The BGTS – Beginner Phase program is structured in the form of 4 quarters (1 year) sequence, 1.5 Credit hours each. The program is innovatively structured using the curriculum and textbooks designed by Samskrita Bharati USA (SBusa.org), with the material contained in the SBusa published books, “GeetA-sopAnam” (Part 1) and “GeetA-praveshaH” (Part 1, Volume 1), augmented with other appropriate course content
