Antique Silver Cups – 1950 and 1960
Despite its size this is an important example of a twin handled silver cup. Its shaped side handles and spreading circular foot are characteristic of early English antique silver. The body of the cup is decorated with a band of hand chased decoration that has matted roundels and punched motifs. This is more restrained than the decoration on other examples of this type and style. A full inscription is engraved just below the rim. This is one of the most interesting inscriptions on a silver cup of this period and possibly refers to Joseph’s infamous cup in which he divined his future.
The tazze, which were all reunited at Waddesdon for the exhibition, have been attributed by Siemon to the workshop of Giovanni Pisano (1475–1564) and are amongst the most important works of Renaissance Italian silver. The 12 dishes each depict a passage from The Twelve Caesars, a biography of Rome’s first 11 emperors by the Roman historian Suetonius. Each dish has four intricate scenes marking the important events in the emperor’s life. The tazze are arranged in four rows and each rests on an ornate pedestal.
The 1950 Silver Cup saw the return of fan favorite Chuck Thompson, driving Guy Lombardo’s Allison-powered MISS PEPSI to victory in a close race with Danny Foster in SUCH CRUST I and Milner Irvin in MISS U.S. II. In the 1960 race the late APBA Inboard Racing Hall of Famer, Dean Chenoweth, won all three heats with his Rolls-Royce Griffon-powered MISS BUDWEISER, beating both Scott Pierce in MISS NORTH TOOL and Mike Squire in MISS TEMPO VII.גביע כסף
