All You Need TO Know About FNS Number
The nine-digit FNS number is assigned to eligible food manufacturers and processors by the USDA. The number provides a way for the USDA to identify companies that participate in the federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (NAPs). NAPs include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program; the National School Lunch Program (NSLP); the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP); the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP); and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).
FNS numbers are also used by state agencies that administer NAPs. State agencies use the FNS number to determine if a company is eligible to participate in NAPs.
The FNS number is also used by companies that participate in the U.S. Food Export Certification Program. The program helps companies export food products to other countries.
If you are a food manufacturer or processor and would like to participate in any of the NAPs, you must first obtain an FNS number. To get an FNS number, you must complete an application and submit it to the USDA. The application can be found on the USDA website.
Once your application is approved, you will be assigned a nine-digit FNS number. You will need to use this number every time you participate in a NAP.
It is important to note that the FNS number is not a licence or permit. It does not guarantee that your company will be approved to participate in any of the NAPs. Each NAP has its own eligibility requirements that must be met in order to participate.
If you have any questions about the FNS number or how to obtain one, you can contact the USDA at 1-888-ask-usda (1-888-275-8732).
