Alcohol Testing – To Determine the Frequency & Pattern of Alcohol Abuse!
Excessive alcohol can affect individual health and also have a severe impact on society. It is responsible for crime, violence, and many alcohol-related incidents. Too much drinking can also increase the risk of mental & physical health complications. It can also impact the higher risk of developing conditions such as heart, liver, & kidneys. In such cases, alcoholism tests can be helpful. Alcohol detection test determines the frequency, history & pattern of alcohol consumption.
What are the Types of Alcoholism Tests?
Types of alcohol detection tests are:
- Nail Alcohol Test
- Hair Alcohol Test
Nail Alcohol Testing: In the liver, ethanol is converted to EtG or ethyl glucuronide and reaches the nails via the bloodstream, primarily the nail bed capillaries. Nail keratin being four times thicker, will usually capture and have alcohol biomarkers for a long time. Therefore, ethyl glucuronide serves as the alcohol biomarker for nail detection tests. It’s a direct alcohol biomarker because it’s yielded when alcoholism is metabolized. In contrast to direct biomarkers such as EtPa & EtG, indirect biomarkers like AST (aspartate aminotransferase), CDT (carbohydrate-deficient transferrin), etc., can measure the effect of alcohol consumption on health.
Sample Collection- For the nail alcohol detection test, nail clipping should be as close to the nail bed as possible. If the length of the nail is five millimeters, one nail clipping can be enough for the testing. When the nail size is shorter than 5mm, it’s better to take 10 mg of nail clippings for a final result. You can use both fingernails or toenails but don’t mix.
Hair Alcohol Testing: Hair alcohol tests can be the solution for parents who doubt their loved ones may be drinking too much alcohol. The body breaks down alcoholism into two metabolites, i.e., Fatty acid thy ester & ethyl glucuronide (EtG). Ethyl Palmitate, or EtPa, is the foundation of hair alcohol detection test. These metabolites are called alcohol biomarkers, and it is absorbed into the hair individually. The alcohol biomarkers level in the hair tells the time of alcohol consumption in an individual and acts as the basis for alcoholism tests.
Sample Collection- For hair alcoholism tests, more than 200 hair strands are required. A minimum 3-5 centimeter section is taken from the head for the EtPa & EtG tests. Depending upon the length of the hair, it can give an overview of extreme alcohol consumption in an individual for three to six months.
