ACH Return Codes – Understanding RDFI & ODFI Responsibilities
When a transaction is returned, the RDFI (receiving depository financial institution) is responsible for providing the return code to the ODFI (originating depository financial institution). The ODFI is then responsible for notifying the originator of the transaction about the return.
There are a few different reasons why an ACH transaction may be returned. The most common reason is because of insufficient funds in the account, but other reasons can include Closed Account, No Account/Unable to Locate Account, and Invalid Account Number.
