A New Way of Learning: STEM and Gamification
Recently Gamification -which involves games or game-like elements to empower participation, has become a helpful way for teachers to engage their students. For STEM which is the most in-demand topic in education, this method is exceptionally useful to create an environment that undermines the traditional classroom setting, changing it into a space that encourages interaction and investigation.
STEM stands for (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and Gamification, both are used to encourage a child’s learning and skills.
In this article, we describe the benefits of STEM and Gamification for educators who are interested in innovative ways of teaching and problem-solving.
Let’s start with the STEM: A New Way of Learning
- STEM
STEM has evolved into an effective mode of teaching and learning, one that focuses on individual students’ interests. STEM has something to offer for each student. Unlike traditional methods in which subject areas were focused on separately, STEM education emphasizes innovation and integrates subjects in ways that add disciplines and relates them to one another.
- Gamification Theory
Gamification can be defined as a set of activities to solve problems by using the game elements.
Its application in education is that students learn best when they are also having a good time. Not just this – they also learn best when they have major goals, focus points and achievements to go after, obviously in a way the student sees as fun.
While normal game elements are in no way, or form new, they have become increasingly common in non-game contexts like websites, digital marketing, enterprise app sand, virtual to-do lists and efficiency tools.
Benefits of combining Stem and Gamification
STEM
There are some proven benefits of STEM Education, like:
- STEM aims to prepare students for the difficulties and challenges our society is confronting with
- It also helps develop a stronger foundation in math and science technology
- Students can attempt a lot of experiments and hone their thought process
- Apart from personal growth, it allows students to achieve greater academic success
- Develop cognitive skills and learn the basics of coding and engineering
Gamification
Several benefits of involving Gamification in the classroom:
- Learning becomes apparent through progress markers
- Learners can discover various identities through different characters
- Students are more relaxed in gaming environments, more proactive and open to making errors as well
- Higher commitment and concentration levels among learners
- It gives chance to think out of the box
