A friable cervix in pregnancy

First, we need to understand what a friable cervix actually means? Cervix is basically the part of your reproductive tract that joins your vagina with the uterus. Having a friable cervix means that you have a cervix whose tissues are torn and irritated. The tissues of a friable cervix slough and bleed more easily when touched as it is severely sensitive and therefore, gets easily irritated.

Having a friable cervix in pregnancy is something that you may get to hear frequently. The condition is not uncommon or different. A number of hormonal changes occur during pregnancy. One of the causes of developing a friable cervix is hormonal fluctuations. During pregnancy, the cervix becomes tender and full of blood vessels. Even the slightest jerks or bumping can irritate the cervix and therefore result in the blood through the vagina. This means having sexual intercourse with a friable cervix can most probably cause bleeding or spotting after sex.  These causes of the friable cervix in pregnancy are not to be worried about.

If the friable cervix is because of some underlying diseases such as cervical infections, cervical disorders, inflammation of the cervix, or development of tumors on the cervix, you need to see your doctor immediately. Your doctor will check for the symptoms of the underlying conditions and might prescribe you medications to treat them. Otherwise, it may become a big problem for you or your baby. Most cervical problems result in premature delivery.

There is another condition known as the incompetent cervix or cervical insufficiency. It is when you have weak cervical tissue. It can cause your cervix to open too soon and result in the premature delivery of the baby. Your doctor will most likely ask you to get an ultrasound so that he or she may examine the situation more clearly. The cervical insufficiency or incompetency can be treated through medications.

The bleeding or spotting during pregnancy while having sex or after sex should be taken seriously. Most of the time it is not harmful to your baby. But sometimes all odds can turn against you since there always are exceptional cases.
