A Few Less-Known Facts About Mosasaurs
A mosasaur is a gigantic carnivore that used to swim in the sea around 80 million to 66 million years ago. People have been collecting the marine fossils of the mosasaurs for decades. They are very precious and unique. They were considered to be very special because of the following characteristics:
- The biggest of this species were longer than T-rex:Even though there have been no complete specimens to prove that the biggest mosasaurs were longer than T rex. Their length reached around 14 to 15 meters and 46-50 feet. Even though the Tyrannosaurus was heavier than the mosasaur. It measured around 40 feet from nose to tail. Not all of the mosasaurs were giants. If you looked at them in real life, some of these species looked dwarfish beside an average American alligator. The fully grown Carinodens Belgicus species, measured around 6.5 feet long.
- Closest living relatives are snakes and monitor lizards:Just like the mosasaur, snakes also have extra teeth. You can also find the mosasaur teeth for sale. Monitor lizards such as the Komodo dragon were close a kins to the extinct reptiles, the mosasaurs. They had forked and flickering tongues like their modern brethren. The tongue is a soft tissue which does not usually fossilize which is why it is not possible to have a surety about its features.
- They gave birth to live young :A 50-foot mosasaur weighed around 5000 kg which is equal to 5.5 tons. Something that huge would obviously struggle to pull itself ashore in order to give birth. This is the reason why it gives birth to its babies beneath the waves like many other oceanic animals. They gave birth to new babies in order to stay young and live longer.
- Jaws of the mosasaur were quite interesting:The mosasaur jaws were pretty terrifying and interesting. They had two extra rows of teeth inside its jaw. This design is made to make it easier for them to grip food underwater which otherwise would have been a challenge for mosasaurs.
The fossils of the mosasaur can be found in any continent including Antarctica. During the last years of the family’s existence, strange new varieties of the species began to emerge. They dined on fishes and the other smaller reptiles in the ocean for their food. They were a very unique species whose fossils are very precious to own.
