A NEW ROUND OF GRANTS FOR QUEENSLAND COMMUNITY GROUPS TO GO SOLAR
Queensland Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon has recently announced a new round of grants available to community groups interested in switching to solar energy. A further $3 million in grants has been made available to eligible community groups as part of the Community Sustainability Action grants program.
Increased grants and availability
The Community Sustainability Action grants program has been in place for some time now, with this recent announcement representing Round 7 of the program. The good news for people who may have missed out previously is that there’s even more on offer this time around.
Round 6 of the program had $1.2 million worth of grants available, but this has been more than doubled to $3 million for Round 7. In addition, Round 6 offered a cap of $50,000 per applicant, but this has also been doubled to $100,000.
What projects are eligible?
The grants program has a big focus on sustainability, in particular, solar energy systems and solar battery storage solutions. Some of the eligible types of projects are listed below:
- Solar energy systems, including solar panels, inverters, and battery storage. Systems are eligible for up to 30kW capacity.
- Solar batteries and infrastructure to be added to existing solar systems.
- Wiring and other smart energy system upgrades for community facilities.
- Solar hot water systems.
- High energy efficiency white goods and appliances.
- Energy-efficient lighting upgrades.
- Other energy efficiency projects such as double-glazed windows or skylights.
How to apply
If you’re interested in kicking off a sustainability project and you meet the necessary requirements as a community group, you can apply directly for a grant. Two quotes from Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved solar retailers are required, and these quotes must include a projection of energy savings. Previous energy bills are also required as part of the application, ideally one from summer and one from winter.
