New Zealand

You probably recognise a lot of the New Zealand squad members from their participation in the final the year before. Any team that features Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Kane Williamson is going to be extremely risky. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s seam attack is undoubtedly the best in the tournament. He also has the most reliable batting pairing in the form of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, who have combined for 840 runs and an average 49.41. The top order has some problems, but as England showed in their seven-game win there last month, they are not impossible to beat. They were the most exciting of the World Cup teams and should be more dangerous on these surfaces if it is possible.

South Africa

South Africa defeated England in three games this summer, despite David Miller scoring only 30 runs. In the Indian series, he showed what he can do. He started with a three-ball duck, followed by a brilliant, unbeaten 47 ball 106 and a five-ball 19. South Africa has a trio with big-scoring bats. Rillee Rossouw, Tristan Stubbs and Miller all have strike rates above 180. Rossouw and Miller both average over 50. The captain Temba Bavuma, who has an average of 10.66 and a strike rate 82, is less promising. He would not be able to compete with the other sides in this competition.

Sri Lanka

After being deemed outsiders by many, Sri Lanka was able to make it through the opening group despite a defeat to Namibia. This earned them a spot in Group 1. Chris Silverwood also made it to Group 1, where he reunited with England. Dushmantha Chamela and Dunushka Gunathilaka, both of whom were victims of muscle tear injuries, have had to be treated by the team. They were clearly not prepared for their first match, but they have improved and are now match-ready.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe had the advantage of playing their qualifying tournament at home. They won five of the five matches and swept through the final with five wins from five. Their all-rounder Sikandar Raza scored 228 runs, which is an average of 41.2 runs at a strike rate 154.50. This trend has continued into the World Cup. Raza was not only Zimbabwe’s top run-scorer, but he also ranked second among their bowlers on economy rate (just after Tendai Chatara), and second on wickets, (after Blessing Muzarabani).
