Who was Marcus Garvey?:
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born on August 17th. Born 1887 in Saint Anna’s Bay, colonial Jamaica. His parents were poor, working-class black Jamaicans who raised their children Christian.
As a child, he dated a white, upper-class girl of the same age until the age of 14, when her parents decided it was time and better for their child to draw the racial line.
This was young Marcus’ first conscious experience of the white, racist power structure.
After leaving school, Garvey learned the trade of printer.
He enjoyed playing cricket, loved swimming and read a great deal of books. Later he once said:
“Use every spare minute you have in reading… Read through at least one book a week… Never forget that intelligence rules the world and ignorance carries the burden.”
In the early 20th century, Garvey became one of the most influential figures. To improve the miserable condition of black communities around the world, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and later moved to the United States, where he became involved in the black national movement.
Garvey is best known for his advocacy for Black self-reliance and self-determination. He believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and culture and founded UNIA to promote these values. His ideas attracted widespread attention and he quickly became a driving force behind black decolonization movements in the 20th century.
Its worldwide following was larger than the Third Communist International in its day, with the size of its organization being estimated at between two and six million members, according to various sources.
about the project:
This website is the continuation of the previously published German translation of the Empowering Words of the Honorable ” Marcus Mosiah Garvey “.
His life is seen as a red rag in mainstream society and is often portrayed incorrectly and distorted. This because he laid the foundation for many decolonization movements worldwide , some of which are still going on today!
Here the founder of the first Black Nationalist movement of the 20th century ( UNIA ) should have his say. This should give all interested parties the opportunity to make their own judgment about Marcus Garvey ‘s black history .
