- Virtue 2: On this day, Allah(SWT) had saved the People of Israel: According to Islamic history, the 10th of Muharram was the day when Allah (SWT) miraculously saved Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers from the army of the cruel Pharaoh. It is said that while escaping from the evil Pharaoh (Pheroin) and his army Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers came to a dead-end at the Red sea. With nowhere to go, Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers lost their hope and prayed to Allah (SWT) for help. - Virtue 3: At Mount Judi, the Prophet Noah’s Ark’s journey came to an end:The trip of Prophet Noah’s (RA) ark came to an end on the side of Mount Judi on the 10th of Muharram, according to the narration by Imam Ahmad (May Allah have pity on him). According to tradition, Prophet Noah (RA) constructed an ark at Allah’s (SWT) order in order to transport his followers, his family and pairs of every animal in the world to a safe area. On the day of Ashura, the ark arrived at its destination without incident despite being trapped in a hazardous storm.

Virtue 4: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed fasting on this day before earning Prophet hood:The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast on the tenth of Muharram even before he was given the gift of prophecy.
“Perhaps Quraysh used to fast on that day based on some previous law, such as that of Prophet Ibrahim (RA)”,
says Imam Al Qurtubi (may Allah have compassion on him) in another narrative.
- Virtue 5: Fasting on this day is mandatory: According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers would observe a fast on the same day even before it became mandatory for Muslims to fast throughout Ramadan (10th Muharram).
“Allah’s messenger (PBUH) commanded (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura and when fasting throughout the month of Ramadan was compulsory, it became voluntary for one to fast on that day (Ashura)”
according to a Hadith related by Hazrat Aisha (RA). [Sahih Al Bukhari]
- Virtue 6: Fasting on this day removes all the sins of the entire year: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) expressed his belief in the significance of fasting throughout the month of Muharram by saying,
“I trust that Allah (SWT) would accept it (fasting on the day of Ashura) as expiation for the previous year.” [Sahih Al Bukhari]
- Virtue 7: On this day, blessings flow from spending on family: According to Islamic traditions, keeping a fast on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram) will bring you enormous rewards for the entire year ahead.
“One who freely spends on his family on ‘Ashura (10th of Muharram), Allah would be generous on him for the entire year,”
the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared in reference to this. [Al-Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Iman]
- Virtue 8: Always remember to fast on the 9th of Muharram: Before he passed away, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared,
“God willing, we would also fast on the ninth day if I survive to see the following year.”
