As the 100-day countdown to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 begins, cricket takes over Melbourne
The iconic Yarra River in Melbourne is the setting for a city centre cricketing stadium built to mark 100 days till Australia hosts the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time, signalling the start of “The Big Time.”
In order to commemorate 100 days until the world’s top cricketers from 16 teams play for the ultimate reward in T20 cricket, the pitch from Melbourne Cricket Ground was moved into the heart of Melbourne. Together with cricket greats Shane Watson, Waqar Younis, and Morne Morkel, Australian international talents Aaron Finch, Georgia Wareham, and Tayla Vlaeminck launched the Nissan-sponsored ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour.
More than ever before, The Trophy Tour will stop at 35 venues across 13 nations and four continents. For the first time, the Men’s T20 World Cup trophy will stop in Fiji, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Namibia, Nepal, Singapore, and Vanuatu, allowing more spectators in various nations to see the sport’s grand prize.
Fans will be able to participate in The Trophy Tour from home using a 3D augmented reality filter that is hosted on the official T20 World Cup Facebook and Instagram channels. The Trophy Tour is created for anybody, everywhere, at any time. Cricket fans are invited to use their imaginations to creatively display their home grounds using the trophy filter. A select few will be honoured with prizes based around the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup each week for the finest fan-generated photographs.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022’s first match between 2014 Champions Sri Lanka and Namibia will be played in Geelong on October 16 as part of the Trophy Tour, which started in Melbourne and has since travelled the world.
On the T20 World Cup website’s dedicated Trophy Tour page or through the social media outlets for the tournament, fans may follow the trophy as it travels across the globe.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 is expected to draw over 800,000 spectators thanks to the additional tickets made available today for every game but the October 23 match between India and Pakistan. When general admission tickets for this match went on sale to the general public in February, they were all sold out in less than five minutes. If more seats become available for the event, they will be made available later.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said:
“With just 100 days to go until the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup there is a real sense of excitement ahead of the 16 teams coming together in Australia to compete for the ultimate prize in T20 cricket.
“Celebrating the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan, is another important milestone in taking the Trophy to ten countries for the first time ever, once again showing our commitment to using the T20 format as vehicle to grow the game and to engage new fans across the world.”
Australian men’s captain Aaron Finch said:
“It’s an exciting time for cricket with so many world class teams coming out to play all around the country. Now that there’s just 100 days to go, you can feel the excitement building among the team about the prospect of playing in a home World Cup in front of our fans.
“In a World Cup every game is a tough game, and anyone can beat anyone on their day so the white ball cricket we’ve got coming up over the next couple of months is going to be crucial to make sure we are ready come the first ball of the World Cup in October.”
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan, ambassador Shane Watson said:
“As a player, there’s few things that can top playing in a home World Cup and I can’t wait to see the world’s best T20 players on the fast bouncy pitches in Australia. It’s going to be an incredible spectacle.
“Leading up to the event, I’m also looking forward to taking the T20 World Cup trophy around our beautiful country to give fans the opportunity to be part of this massive cricket celebration.”
Nissan Australia Managing Director, Adam Paterson said:
“With 100 days until the first ball of the World Cup, Nissan is gearing up for a spectacular event across the country. We are proud to continue to play an important role in driving excitement and innovation, supporting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan, with Nissan Ambassadors, Mel Jones and Mitchell Johnson behind the wheel.”
