What to Do if You Get Into A Car Accident In the Middle of Heavy Rain

Slippery roads and low visibility cause the most common car accidents during the rainy season. While seasoned drivers can drive through heavy weather, it’s not something they should do unless caught by surprise. That said, car accidents are pretty common during typhoon and monsoon seasons. 

If you do find yourself in an accident, stay calm and remember to do the following:

Dial for help immediately

Once you’re back to your senses, call for help. Prioritize dialing the PH emergency number before contacting your friends and family about your situation. If you’re in an area where the phone signal is weak, check if you can safely move to a higher place to get better coverage.

Check if your passengers are alright

Before putting the phone down, check the conditions of everyone riding with you. Tell the operator if there’s anyone in critical condition. Use a first aid kit to treat and assist wounded passengers. Depending on the rain, you may need to lead them to shelter.

Exchange information with the other driver

You should stay calm and assess the situation when involved in a car accident. Immediately check to see if anyone is injured or needs medical attention, and call for help. Once you have ensured everyone is safe, you can begin exchanging info with the other driver. 

Be sure to get their name, insurance information, and contact information. If there are any witnesses to the accident, be sure to get their names and contact info for the police report. This exchange also helps you get financial aid from your car insurance company in the Philippines. 

Even with the promise of financial aid, it’s still better to skip out on driving in bad weather. Accidents are avoidable even on the long provincial roads. If the rain comes, slow down and ensure your windshield wipers are doing their job. If you can’t see where you’re going, find the nearest spot you can stop and wait.
